ARB. Here is a duplicate 35mm color slide of a photo by David R. Sweetland that was taken in Altoona, Pennsylvania, in July of 1960. Shown here (R to L) are Pennsylvania Railroad engine #5822 and another "Centipede" whose road number is not recorded. Both were built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works as BP-60's for passenger service and rated at 3,000 horsepower each; both were later regeared for freight service and reclassified as BH-50's rated at 2,500 horsepower each. #5822 was built in February of 1948 and retired in April of 1962 after just 14 years of revenue service. They are about to pass under the 8th Street Bridge in Juniata with a mixed-cargo freight train on their way up the Allegheny Mountains to Gallitzin and points West. |
