A CN local crosses the former joint MILW/SOO bridge over the South Channel (Neenah Channel) of the Fox River at Neenah, WI on 8 Mar. '19. The corporate headquarters of Plexus, 1 Plexus Way, stands in the background. Plexus stands on the site of the former P. H. Glatfelter Co. paper mill, which stood here for 135 years, the oldest part of the original mill was constructed in 1874. Glatfelter purchased the mill from Bergstrom Paper Co. in 1979. Bergstrom had purchased the mill, originally Winnebago Paper, in 1904. Glatfelter moved the jobs to Ohio in June 2006, the mill stood idle for about two years until it was torn down, demolition was completed in May 2009. Some people like the style and appearance of this new building, I do not. To me, this and other recent additions to the local skyline are abominations. Looking east from the new Loop-the-Lake bridge (the ribbon cutting ceremony for this and the similar bridge in Menasha was held 23 Jun. '18). The pair of new bridges are part of Neenah and Menasha's Loop-the-Lake project to connect existing recreational trails in the Twin Cities. This new view of the railroad bridge is interesting, but I will miss the once panoramic view of this bridge from the river bank. |
