A CN local approaches Milepost 1 and Garfield Ave. as it heads south via the former joint MILW/SOO rails at Menasha, WI on 4 Jul. '19. The former Mondi Akrosil, LLC, facility, 206 Garfield Ave., is partially visible at right. Mondi moved the jobs to Pleasant Prairie, WI, circa '12. Originally Edgewater Paper Co., founded in 1917, which specialized in silicone coated release paper. It was purchased by Akrosil Corp., a holding company, in '69 but didn't change the name to Akrosil until Apr. '74. The Hammermill Paper Co. purchased Akrosil ca. '75, but apparently did not change the name. The facility operated as International Paper-Akrosil after International purchased Hammermill in '86. International sold some of its holdings, including this facility, to Kohlberg & Co., LLC, another holding company, in Jun. '05. Mondi Packaging, based in Vienna, Austria, purchased Akrosil in Jan. '06. There are remnants of a spur on the west side of the facility, but it has not received rail service for a long time. It appears to possibly be used for storage or warehousing. |
