CN 4705
A CN local crosses Washington St. as it emerges from U.S. Paper Mills Corp. at Menasha, WI on 2 Sep. '19. This mill began production in 1891 as the John Strange Paper Co. It was purchased by Menasha Corp. in 1969 and renamed John Strange Paperboard Div. It was sold to U.S. Papers Corp. in 1981. It was sold to Sonoco ca. 2002. I’m not sure who these rails originally belonged to, the MILW, SOO, and C&NW all had access to this small, mostly industrial island for many years. This island was formed when the Fox River Navigation Canal was excavated ca. 1856 (when the lock was completed). Boy, did I ever receive some suspicious glares from some paranoid employees while I was standing on the public sidewalk, next to the public thoroughfare, waiting for the locomotive to emerge from this facility.
