Monsanto Chemical Co. tank car MCPX 23020 had been built under ACF Industries Lot No. 18-13181 in November 1966 as a part of the 23000-23036 series. These 37 cars were built to carry elemental phosphorous, and because this is 80% denser than water, they had the lowest capacity of any 6-axle tank cars, just 22,500 gallons. They had a LT WT of 93,000 pounds and a LD LMT of 301,000 pounds, for a gross rail load of 394,000 pounds; and although the cars were originally equipped with American Steel Foundries trucks – as shown here – at least some were refitted with Buckeyes. The last of these cars were retired in 1992. |
