Hollidaysburg. Here is the first of two successive duplicate 35mm color slides of photos by Herbert G. Frank, Jr., that were taken just West of Hollidaysburg, Pennsylvania, c. 1957. Shown here is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #117, an L-1S (2-8-2) "Mikado" built in Juniata in December of 1917 and retired in October of 1959 after 42 years of faithful service. It's pulling a mixed-cargo freight train out of the Hollidaysburg Yards. It's stopped at the dwarf signal, but will shortly head toward the Wye Switches in Duncansville ~ where it will either turn right and head toward Altoona or head up the Allegheny Mountains via the Muleshoe Curve to Gallitzin and points West. |
