In late 2002 the Canadian National removed the last vestiges of the former Illinois Central inbound and outbound main lines just north of New Orleans Union Passenger Terminal. These two lines had been severed at the New Orleans city limit in early 1954, when the IC began using NOUPT; but remained in place to serve various freight customers. These businesses gradually switched to truck, relocated or closed and by the beginning of the 21st century none were left. Here is a view from the end of NOUPT track along Earhart Boulevard near South Dupre Street. The sign of the last customer in this area, the Blue Plate Mayonnaise plant at the corner of South Jefferson Davis Parkway and Earhart Boulevard, could be seen on the left. |
