No more grain here  Contributor's Pick!
Well, more grain, just none of it by rail. Many smaller elevators did not have enough volume to keep rail service competitive once unit trains became prevalent, and the railroads didnt help matters by pricing the small moves so that they were uneconomical. Elevators like this could not keep up and went to trucks. The trucks went to elevators that could take advantage of volume rates, driving off business. That allowed many lightly trafficked branches to be abandoned, such as this ex Santa Fe line in Hardtner Kan.
