A very "bucolic" scene (or should that be "Bovine" scene) near Cumberland, Maryland, of Western Maryland Scenic RR 2-8-0 Consolidation with freight in the background. The loco was finished by Baldwin on April 16, 1916 originally as Lake Superior & Ishpeming #18 for use as a dock switcher. It was renumbered 34 in 1924 and continued to serve until retirement in 1961. It was sold to the Marquette & Huron Mountain RR in 1963 (nicknamed "Mountain Thunder") but never operated there. Eventually it was sold to the Illinois Railway Museum for a static display. Western Maryland has owned it since 1991. It was restored in 1998 and ran tourist trains for WM Scenic RR. Unfortunately, by 2015 it was pulled from service and now awaits a full restoration and rebuild. |
