Here is page 52 of Mahlon J. Baumgardner & Floyd G. Hoenstine's 1952 monograph entitled "The Allegheny Old Portage Railroad: 1834-1854." The illustration is entitled "Inclined Plane No. 5." Caption: "Shows boilers which supplied steam for engines to control cables attached to cars for lowering and raising. This plane was located a short distance from the Summit House." Note the steam locomotive poised at the far end of the passageway. |
