This power was common on 553 at the time. Trin 557 would arrivce from Philly, drop its Xt Lucs, which would be picked up by power that had come in on southbound counterpart 554. The 557 would go on to Toronto, and 553 would head north. Conrail didn't like Alco power, so the 557 and 558 trains usually got EMD's, though an occasional C424 would sneak through, and more occasionally, a six axle MLW. The best thing about these trains, aside from the Alco power, was that they were scheduled to hit Binghamton in the middle of the day, and were generally on time, It made for a wonderful sunlit chase west for 557, and a nicely lit southbound chase for 554 if you got up to, say, Oneonta, early in the day.
