FM. Here is an image of a photo by Fred McLeod that was taken near Gallitzin, Pennsylvania, on 9 October 1949. Shown here (R to L) is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #3763 and a pair of Baldwin-built BP-60 "Centipedes" whose road numbers are not recorded. #3763 is a K-4S (4-6-2) "Pacific" built in Juniata during April of 1920 and retired in October of 1948 after 28 years of faithful service. In this context, these locomotives are pulling the "Gotham Limited" down the Allegheny Mountains to Altoona, whereupon the "Pacific" will be uncoupled and readied for another helper run up "The Mountain." This image comes from a B&W slide set entitled "Horseshoe Curve, Pennsylvania Railroad" that's produced and distributed by Blackhawk Films of Davenport, Iowa. William E. Burket Collection. |
