Gulf, Mobile & Ohio GP38-2 749 was at CANAL YARD in New Orleans just days before the merger with the Illinois Central on 10 August 1972. The regular use of CANAL YARD ended on the day of the merger, when almost all the former GM&O traffic began moving through the former IC MAYS YARD. The 749 had been built in April 1972, became ICG 9569 and retained the same number as an IC and CN-IC locomotive. It was still at work for the Canadian National 50 years later.
