WB. Here is an image of a photo by an unidentified photographer that was taken in Altoona, Pennsylvania, c. 1967. Parked near the Pennsylvania Railroad's East Altoona Coaling Tipple are several deadlined diesel-electric locomotives. Among them is engine #7739, an FS-20 road switcher built by Fairbanks-Morse as number "8939" in April of 1951, rated at 2,000 horsepower, renumbered "7739" in preparation for the PRR-NYC merger, and retired in December of 1966 after just 15 years of revenue service. The Tipple was not long for this world either; it was demolished in April of 1968. William E. Burket Collection. |
