Here is a post card via Peter Outerbridge entitled "Wilmington Shops." Caption On Reverse: "Wilmington Shops. The main electric shop for the Pennsylvania Railroad was located in Wilmington, Del. This shop also served Penn Central and Amtrak in later years to maintain their fleets of GG-1's and other electric locomotives. GG-1's monopolize the scene in this October 1967 view. Photo by Carl H. Sturner." All nine of the PRR locomotives pictured here are GG-1 (2-C-C-2) electrics rated at 4,620 horsepower each. Of those nine, three are identifiable: #4909, #4878, and #4809. #4909 and #4878 were built in Juniata: the former in December of 1941, the latter in February of 1939. #4809 was constructed by General Electric in July of 1935. |
