Although Baltimore & Ohio wanted diesels instead of more steam locomotives, due to the War Production Board restrictions, the massive Yellowstones were built instead. Baldwin built this loco originally as BO #7629 (serial #71511) but it was renumbered late in its life to BO #679 in February of 1957. The loco was dropped from the roster in 1960 and presumed scrapped. Specs - EM-1 class, 64" drivers, impressive 235 psi boiler pressure, four 24x32" cylinders, massive engine weight of 628,700 lb, impressive tractive effort of 115,000 lb. No photographer was given. |
