Here is an image of a photo by Edward Kaspriske that was taken at the Horseshoe Curve near Altoona, Pennsylvania, in 1955. Shown here (R to L) is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #8964 and another unit whose road number is not recorded. Both are BS-24M's built by Baldwin-Lima-Hamilton and rated at 2,400 horsepower each. #8964 was constructed in November of 1951 and retired in July of 1966 after just 15 years of revenue service. In this context, they're pulling a mixed-cargo freight train around the Curve and down the Allegheny Mountains to Altoona and points East. Edward Kaspriske Collection. |
