Why is it filthy? Between San Luis Obispo and Santa Margarita, this train had diesel helpers that stalled and the mighty 4-8-4 came to the rescue by pushing the dead diesels and the passenger train thru the soot lined tunnels of Cuesta Pass. The steamer steam cleaned the tunnel roofs while working its booster to avoid stalling inside the tunnels.
