The REBEL
I don’t know if this photographer was trying to get the sign in front of the Gentilly Theater or Gulf, Mobile & Ohio Train No. 1 – the southbound REBEL – but he managed to get both. This shot would have been taken at around 7 A.M. in about 1950 at the Southern Railway’s new overpass across Gentilly Blvd. (U.S. 90) in New Orleans. The double feature included IMPACT, which was released in the U.S. on 1 April 1949, and ELEPHANT BOY, which had been released here in April 1937. The REBEL was discontinued between Slidell and New Orleans on 8 March 1954 and the theater burned down in 1978.
