David Mead General Very front on view of this ex-works loco. Perhaps rather too dominent in this case with the zoom but a good record anyway. 6/11/2007 6:56:15 PM
Gary Dyhouse General Just curious, What is an ex-works loco? 6/16/2007 11:08:56 PM
David Mead General Ex-Works is an expression UK railfans say when a locomotive has just come through the Locomotive Workshops, it may have been for a complete overhaul, or a re-paint. It is also referred to brand new locomotives. In UK, locomotives are generally put through the locomotive works every few months for any heavy maintenance. Light general servicing is done at smaller depot locations where there may be wheel-drops, pits etc., but not generally any heavy lifting cranes. The only diesel locomotives in use here are on freights, as the passenger trains are now all "multiple units" (ie. fixed formations). The multiple units all have their own allocated depots for servicing etc. There are a few "heritage" diesels and steam locomotives used for specials and a few "summer only" trains but just a few left. There are of course many private locomotive workshops on private heritage railways in UK. 6/17/2007 4:01:14 AM
