Southbound KCS Grain Train Derailment  Contributor's Pick!
One of the "Belle Hop" Grain Trains derailed 8 loads of wheat late last week here on the KCS Pittsburg Sub. near MP 48 south of the 315th Street Crossing, which is at MP 48.17. They are laying in the edge of a Sunflower Field next to the ROW. Quite a mess. I highly doubt any of the covered hopper cars will be salvaged, as most of them look like the car on the left, so I figure they might all be scrap candidates. Most of the ARI Cars involved were bwilt in April 2007, only 5 months old. The mainline is in the foreground, this view is looking northeast. The derailment was probably caused by a rolled rail in the curve. There were no injuries.

Hank Plow General Glad nobody got hurt. Still a sad sight. Thanks for the close-up coverage. 9/16/2007 11:54:42 PM
Joe Magruder General Thanks for the derailment photos. I've been by the derailment site several times on the highway, but have never taken time to stop and closely look things over. It's a funny sight to see covered hoppers lying in a sunflower field. 9/17/2007 9:59:03 PM
David Mead General Derailments are never good news for railroads wherever they may be. You have a good eye for detail and have not been afraid to submit studies of incidents that railroads would rather forget. 9/22/2007 1:51:17 AM
