Shown here is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #6784, an M-1B (4-8-2) "Mountain" built by the Lima Locomotive Works as an M-1A during March of 1930, rebuilt in Juniata as an M-1B in January of 1947, and retired in August of 1959 after 29 years of faithful service. Note that the second "car" in this train is actually a GM-EMD "EF" Class B-unit! (Gift from Brad Mann.) |

Here is page five of an 11-page cover article by Bert Pennypacker entitled "Atterbury's Engines: Part 1 ~ Great Increases In Horsepower And Speed." It was published originally in the October 1979 issue of "Trains" magazine, page 26. Photo Caption: "On the eve of dieselization, M-1a 6783 had somehow escaped relocation of her turbo-generator and still presented an authentic PRR front end. Photographer [Robert R.] Malinoski caught up with her on Middle Division train M-9 at 2:13 p.m. on October 11, 1956, a mile east of Newport, Pa., with consist of 59 cars." Shown here is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #6783, an M-1A (4-8-2) "Mountain" built by the Lima Locomotive Works during March of 1930 and retired in August of 1959 and after 29 years of faithful service.
