On the other side of town
Title:  On the other side of town
Description:  The big show in Waterloo was the Chicago Central & Pacific, which was quite busy the day I was there. On my way out toward Mason City, I caught this Iowa Northern train, doing its best to impersonate a BN local. IANR would later have a very attractive scheme, but for now, it was a pair of BN geeps to work its piece of the ex Rock. ***UPDATE for early 2024*** CN is acquiring the IANR, so that road will now become a fallen flag.

Working local
Title:  Working local
Description:  Iowa Northern local works a lumber yard before heading out of town. It runs a segment of the Roc”!Island, one of many that found life as a short line after the Rocks 1980 demise.

Iowa Northern (IANR)
Title:  Iowa Northern (IANR)
Description:  For years, the IANR got by with these two geeps. Their arrival at the CNW Cedar Rapids yard was a regular occurance. Today, they are parked behind our rail anchor pile (I was on the track crew in this yard at the time).

IANR 1856 & 1894
Title:  IANR 1856 & 1894
Description:  In the early days, Iowa Northern struggled to stay afloat. For quite a while, they ran these 2 Geeps as main power, after a host of ex Rock Island EMDs failed and were struck on deadlines around the system. When I was a trackman for CNW, the arrival of IANR in the CNW Cedar Rapids yard was an every-other day occurance, always behind these 2 units. IANR chalked in small letters on the hoods was the only indicator of the owner.
