ATSF 4-8-4 #3774 - Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe |
Description: |
Stopped outside this small depot in the open western country, ATSF #3774 was a 1938 Baldwin built 4-8-4 "Northern" type locomotive with very high stepping 80" drivers for speed, a whopping 300 psi boiler pressure and generated a massive 79,968 lb tractive effort, making it ideal for the ATSF long hauls through the western states. During one of its overhauls, this loco was switched to burning oil, a distinct advantage out west. The class was finally retired in 1959. The date of this photo is approximate. |
