Articulated In The Yard |
Description: |
Big Boy 4009 snakes through the yard in Green River. Green River was the original operating base for the Big Boys, before they were reassigned east to Cheyenne and Laramie. Big Boys would still run regularly to Green River as late as 1957, before they were confined to Cheyenne-Laramie service. Obtained from Union Pacific Steam: Big Boy Portraits (Bush, Ehernberger) |

Big Boy and Turbine |
Description: |
Big Boy 4009 and Veranda Gas Turbine 75 depart Laramie with a loaded coal train. The line of boxcars in the background is on Main Track 2, with the station on the other side. The depot has not seen passenger service since 1971, but is still maintained as a local historic site. Note the remnants of a torn-out switch next to 4009s 25,000 Gallon tender. Veranda 75 is the highest-numbered Veranda turbine, and is new to RRPA. Obtained from Union Pacific Steam: Big Boy Portraits (Bush, Ehernberger) |

Big Boy 4009 |
Description: |
Union Pacific 4009 trundles past a string of boxcars in the Cheyenne yard. The 4000-class behemoth was built in September 1941, and was equipped with all the lastest in steam technology. These units were equiped with a pressure lubrication system for the tender, 68" drivers, and roller bearings on all the axles. Despite this modernity, the 4000s were not immune from the march of progress. As diesels became ever more prominent on the Wyoming Division, the 4000s found their usefullness on the decline. By 1959, the final Big Boys were retired, and many, such as 4009, would be cut up for scrap. 4009 would meet the torch in May, 1963, after 18 years of service on the UP. Fresh In The Shops |
Description: |
Having just received its final class 4 repairs, 4009 rests in the roundhouse in fresh paint in February, 1957. These would be 4009s last major repairs in its lifetime, as it would be taken out of service in just a year, and scrapped in an additional 5 years. At The Scrap Dock |
Description: |
UP 4009 has met its fate. Of the 25 Big Boys built, 8 survive today (4004, 4005, 4006, 4012, 4014, 4017, 4018, and 4023). Despite 17 being scrapped, the survival rate for the Big Boys is at 1 in 3, better than the N&W Y6Bs (apologies to N&W fans).
