Title:
PRR 3705, I-1S, c. 1940
Description:
Here is a photo by an unidentified photographer via Rail Photo Service that was taken at the Horseshoe Curve near Altoona, Pennsylvania, c. 1940. Shown here is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #3705, an I-1S (2-10-0) "Decapod" built in Juniata during March of 1919, rebuilt as an I-1SA in March of 1949, and retired in March of 1952 after 33 years of faithful service. In this context, it's pushing a mixed-cargo freight train around the Curve and up the Allegheny Mountains to Gallitzin, where it will be uncoupled and returned to East Altoona for yet another helper/pusher run up "The Mountain." John S. Fisher Collection; #4 of 8.
