Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad Class HT-10A 170781 at Galesburg, Illinois on an unknown day in November 1981, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. The April 1955 issue of the Official Railway Equipment Register ( ORER ) shows a total of 1,850 CB&Q Class HT triple hoppers numbered 170000- -171849. The following is from the book, CB&Q Color Guide to Freight and Passenger Equipment, by Michael J. Spoor: The ( CB&Q ) Havelock shops manufactured 2,500 triple hoppers between 1948 and 1951. The cars had a 70-ton capacity, offset sides, and AAR cast steel trucks. The first carr were designated HT-10 and numbered 170000 - 170499. In 1951 a second batch of 600 cars, classified HT-10A, rolled out of Havelock ( #'s 170500 - 171099 ).

CB&Q class HC-1 180057 at Saint Louis, Missouri on an unknown day in July 1981, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Number 180057 was one of 100 class HC-1 covered hoppers in the 180000-180099 number series built in 1940 by the CB&Q's Galesburg, Illinois shops to a basic ACF design. This series of cars were equipped with eight square loading hatches on the roof, four Enterprise gravity discharge gates, and National Type-B trucks with a five foot, six inch wheelbase. The trucks were classed as No. 70 on the CB&Q, not to be confused with the No. 72 truck (also National Type-B, but a five foot, eight inch wheelbase), which was used on the next batch of HC-1's (#'s 180200-180249), built in 1943 at Havelock, Nebraska.

It was part of a group of 297 car in the 181250-181546 number series built by the CB&Q at Havelock, Nebraska during 1957. It is stenciled: THIS CAR FOR SILICA SAND WHEN EMPTY RETURN TO WEDRON OR OTTAWA. You might wonder about the stars in front of the CAPY and LD LMT, and a little research provided this explanation from Dennis Storzek: The CAPY stencil was a nominal capacity. The LD.LMT. plus the LT.WT. should be the allowable loading for the size and number of axles under the car, unless the LD.LMT number has a star by it, which signified that the owner of the car was imposing a lower limit on its carrying capacity than he axles would allow (TTX flats are often starred, because a concentrated maximum load would exceed the design strength of the center sill). So, the LT.WT. is the weight of an empty, and the LT.WT. + LD.LMT. is the maximum weight of a loaded car, although some cars, like boxcars of merchandise or LCL could be loaded less than maximum capacity.

When built, the HC-1B series were the first to feature plaque-mounted full-color Scotchlite heralds. They were painted a darker red, almost brown, and the roof was painted black.

CB&Q Class HC-1B 181822
Description:
Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad Class HC-1B 181821 at Cicero, Illinois on an unknown day in July 1981, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. This car was one of 350 Class IC-1B cars built by CB&Q's Havelock, Nebraska shops in 1958, number series 181500 - 181899. In the late 1960's the CB&Q overhauled 450 aging Class HC-1 cars built bbtween 1943 and 1951. With the Burlington Northern merger imminent, 250 cars rebuilt in 1969 featured a pre-merger paint scheme that eliminated the herald and substituted!an all-caps BURLINGTON for the previous upper and lower case Burlington at the upper left side of the car. All lettering was red, and space was left for the word NORTHERN, to"be added once the merger was consummated, but that was never done. The BN opted for black lettering, and the lettering font employed by the Q on all its per-merger painued cars did not match the Helvetica font ultimately used by the BN.
