SLSF 4-6-0 #1401 - St Louis-San Francisco (Frisco) |
Description: |
Good looking 4-6-0 ten wheeler built by Burnham, Wms & Co (Baldwin predecessor) in December of 1907. Since the work numbers were not assigned in order, the serial number is unknown for this loco. The 1400s were never converted to oil burning, although their boilers were superheated by the Frisco Shops in the 1920's. The class was "dismissed from service" between March 1950 and November 1951. A note on the back of this photo states "Blue (?) sideboard" as a comment on the minimal streamlining that the Frisco did on this loco by just adding the side boards. No photographer was listed for the photo. |

Here is another view of the partially streamlined 1910 Baldwin built 4-6-2 Pacific SLSF #1036 with its added sideboards. This was an inexpensive way to freshen up the appearance of an older traditional steam engine. No photographer, location or date was given for the photo. |

Besides a GP38 wearing the number "713", this Alco-Brooks 4-6-0 ten wheeler did at a much earlier date. The loco was built in June of 1906. A note on the back states "dead in train" so much be in route to the Frisco shops as dead weight of a steam loco was not done very often by railroads. The locos in this 695 class were superheated by the Frisco shops and lasted into the late 1940's and early 1950's before retirement. Charles E. Winters photo |

Here is another 1907 Burnham, Williams & Co (Baldwin) built ten wheeler sitting with others in a storage line at Fort Smith, Arkansas. Note the window carefully covered and all parts are still attached. By 1950-51, all in her class had been retired so she still has several more years to go in this photo, especially during WWII. |

SLSF 4-6-2 #1007 - St Louis-San Francisco (Frisco) |
Description: |
If the date on this photo is correct, this Alco-Brooks 4-6-2 looks like it has just been delivered even though it has served over 45 years. A note on the back of the photo states "on '20-21'" - not sure what this reference is. Jonathan Spurlock (see comment below) has speculated it is in reference to train #20/21 which makes sense. Thanks, Jonathan! Built by Alco-Brooks in February of 1904, it was one of the first Pacifics on the Frisco roster. Specs - serial #28697, class 1000, 69" drivers, 200 psi boiler pressure, 20x26" cylinders, engine weight of 193,550 lb, tractive effort of 25,623 lb. No photographer was listed for the photo. |
