Album Info:Most, if not all, of the photographs in this album were captured in Northeast Wisconsin in the spring of 2020, so they are mostly CN operating on former C&NW, GB&W, MILW, and SOO rails. Once in a while I try to catch ELS and WSOR on former MILW rails too.

EAMX 118046
Title:  EAMX 118046
Description:  EAMX 118046, with a load of telephone poles, was part of the consist of a CN through freight headed northeast at Shawano Junction, Fox Crossing, Winnebago Co., WI (formerly Town of Menasha, Winnebago Co., WI, from 1855 until 14 Apr. 2016) on 9 May. '20. This spot used to be named Fox River Junction, after several segments of the original C&NW main line through Menasha and Neenah were removed and a turnout was installed here which allows the bypass of missing C&NW rails by using former SOO rails.

CN 2921, CN 3260, CN 2843, WC 1552
Title:  CN 2921, CN 3260, CN 2843, WC 1552
Description:  A CN through freight leans into the west leg of the wye as it heads northwest via former SOO rails at Neenah, WI on 9 May '20. On the far side of the train lies Arrowhead Park, a closed paper sludge landfill. Before the landfill was opened in the '50s, the south shore of Little Lake Butte des Morts came right up to the north leg of the wye, which bisects the scene. Toward the right, a large quantity of fill is being added to the eastern half of the park, in preparation of future improvements. The Fox Valley Energy Center (formerly Minergy Fox Valley Glass Aggregate Plant) dominated the eastern half of the landfill/park from its opening in Jan. '98 until demolition was completed in the spring of '16. The former C&NW bridge across Little Lake Butte des Morts, now part of the Friendship Trail (often erroneously referred to as the Trestle Trail), can be seen in the background. The Roland Kampo Bridge, a.k.a. the Polish Connection, can be seen beyond that.

CN 5742
Title:  CN 5742
Description:  As a CN through freight traverses the west leg of the wye, a CN work train traverses the north leg of the wye at the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI, on 9 May '20. The foundation from the ca. 1955 masonry SOO depot stands to the left. It was built to replace the wooden depot built in 1891 on Sherry St., about 850 ft. to the southeast, which was torn down soon after the new one opened. On the far side of the train lies Arrowhead Park, a closed paper sludge landfill. Before the landfill was opened in the '50s, the south shore of Little Lake Butte des Morts came right up to the north leg of the wye. A large quantity of fill is being added to the eastern half of the park, in preparation of future improvements. The Fox Valley Energy Center (formerly Minergy Fox Valley Glass Aggregate Plant) dominated the eastern half of the landfill from its opening in Jan. '98 until demolition was completed in the spring of '16. Clearwater Paper Corp., historically Kimberly-Clark’s Lakeview mill, 249 N. Lake St., Neenah, WI (physically located in Fox Crossing, WI (formerly Town of Menasha, WI, from 1855 until 14 Apr. 2016)), an active rail customer, stands in the background at left. The former C&NW bridge across Little Lake Butte des Morts, now part of the Friendship Trail (often erroneously referred to as the Trestle Trail), can be seen in the background. The Roland Kampo Bridge, a.k.a. the Polish Connection, can be seen beyond that.

Title:  WC 5735, et al.
Description:  WC 5735, carrying CN 52224, CN 66631, CN 668-13, was part of the consist of a CN work train traversing the east leg of the wye and passing the Main St. overpass as it shoved its train into the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI, on 9 May '20. The Edward Smith Octagon House, 347 Smith St., is partially visible beyond the train. The house was erected between 1851 and 1854. Edward Smith, who operated a flour mill and had an early interest in the Neenah Paper Co., purchased the home in 1855. It has been owned by the Neenah Historical Society since 1993. The area between the tracks and Union St., from Main St. to Monroe St., used to be the yard. I don't know when the current, significantly larger yard (extending southwestward from Winneconne Ave.) was built, but a map from 1909 shows the yard still here.

CN 5742
Title:  CN 5742
Description:  A CN work train parallels Union St. as it shoves its train into the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI, on 9 May '20. The train was traversing the wye in order to turn around. The Edward Smith Octagon House, 347 Smith St., stands at left. The house was erected between 1851 and 1854. Edward Smith, who operated a flour mill and had an early interest in the Neenah Paper Co., purchased the home in 1855. It is commonly referred to as the Hiram Smith Octagon House, Hiram purchased it from his brother Edward at some point. It has been owned by the Neenah Historical Society since 1993. The City of Neenah wanted to demolish it when the over-priced and over-budget Main St. overpass (out of frame to left) was built. Thankfully there were enough intelligent people around to save it by having it moved a short distance from its original site. Some references claim the historic structure was not moved, but the overpass design was modified to accommodate it. Other references support my recollection that the house was moved, included an article from the local newspaper on 15 Apr. '98 which stated, "federal rail safety funds will cover 90% of the additional $200,000 needed to move the historic Octagon House, 336 Main St., about 500 feet east to the corner of Smith and Torrey streets." (although, if it was actually moved, it wasn't moved that far). Of course, some question why those funds were utilized for a project that had no direct relation on rail safety. The process of trying to move the house dragged on for at least 3 years. An article in the local newspaper on 18 Oct. ’01 stated that the relocation was still going to happen, but the estimated cost to move it had tripled by that point. Regardless of whether it was moved or remains at its original site, I’m just glad that it was saved. The area between the tracks and Union St., from Main St. to Monroe St., used to be the yard. I don't know when the current, significantly larger yard (extending southwestward from Winneconne Ave.) was built, but a map from 1909 shows the yard still here.

CN 5742
Title:  CN 5742
Description:  A CN work train parallels Union St. and passes the former Adams St. grade crossing at the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI, on 9 May '20. I get a kick out of the fact that, even though the grade crossing was removed about 32 years ago, the painted markings on the pavement remain. The train had one locomotive,. The area between the tracks and Union St., from Main St. to Monroe St., used to be the yard. I don't know when the current, significantly larger yard (extending southwestward from Winneconne Ave.) was built, but a map from 1909 shows the yard still here.

CN, former SOO, Neenah, WI, Yard
Title:  CN, former SOO, Neenah, WI, Yard
Description:  Looking northeast over the south end of the CN, former SOO, yard at Neenah, WI, on 15 May '20. One reason for this photograph is the four yellow John Deere tracked vehicles staged at this end of the yard. They, and others, will soon be loaded onto flatcars for Michels Materials. It is an interesting process to watch, if you happen to be at the right place at the right time. The tracks at the far right are remnants of the former C&NW main line and yard. The tan 4- or 5-story facility at the center of the horizon is currently home to 5K Fibres, 1111 Henry St., based in Greenville, WI. They purchased the former Kimberly-Clark Corp. (K-C) Neenah Nonwovens Facility ca. Apr. '20.

The building in the background, 716 Harrison St., still used by Neenah Foundry, I believe, is in the process of being spruced up with a fresh coat of paint and some new doors.

CN 3106 and CN 3041
Title:  CN 3106 and CN 3041
Description:  A CN through freight passes the Main St. overpass and traverses the west leg of the wye as it prepares to set out and pick up cars at the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI, on 23 May '20. The white building partially visible at left is, or was, Progressive Paper Storage, Inc. (formerly Kimberly-Clark Warehouse (K-C Warehouse)), 135 Millview Dr. It does not receive rail service, but it looks like there may have been a spur on the northwest side of the building in the past. First Presbyterian Church, 200 S. Church St., can be seen above the cab of the lead locomotive. The clock tower of the once impressive 1888 city hall building, intersection of S. Commercial St. and W. Doty St., looks like a church steeple from this perspective, but it is a block east of the church.

Title:  CNA 405098, et al.
Description:  Looking northeast over the south end of the CN, former SOO, yard at Neenah, WI, on 23 May '20. One reason for this photograph is the Caterpillar and John Deere tracked vehicles which have been loaded onto flatcars, or are waiting to be loaded, for Michels Materials. The tracks at the far right are remnants of the former C&NW main line and yard. This particular remnant of the main line has been reduced to a spur. The CN depot/yard office is the gray building to the left. The tan 4- or 5-story facility behind and to the right of that is 5K Fibres, 1111 Henry St., based in Greenville, WI. They purchased the former Kimberly-Clark Corp. (K-C) Neenah Nonwovens Facility ca. Apr. '20. The silver silos beyond and to the right of that belong to Galloway Co., Inc., an active rail customer at the end of this portion of the former C&NW main line. The facility was started in 1927 at 601 S. Commercial St. as Neenah Milk Products, Galloway took it over in 1955. The facility has been expanded over the old right-of-way since the rails were pulled up. The clock tower of the once impressive 1888 city hall building, intersection of S. Commercial St. and W. Doty St., is partially visible on the horizon above the depot/yard office. To either side of that, some of downtown Neenah's bland, unimaginative, modern buildings, posing as architecture, can be seen. I am not a fan of modern architecture, obviously.

Title:  CN, former SOO, Neenah, WI, Yard and former C&NW Main Line
Description:  A CN local prepares to switch a couple of customers via a remnant of the former C&NW main line, now relegated to a spur, at Neenah, WI, on 25 May '20. The remnant of the former C&NW main line in the foreground has been relegated to a passing siding. The former SOO rails run parallel to the left. Neenah Foundry Plant 2 & Plant 3 are partially visible to the right. Plant 2 opened in 1960 and Plant 3 was built in 1967. Plant 1 opened in 1918 and stood about a mile to the north, until it was closed in 1994 and eventually demolished. The W. Cecil St. overpass (Timothy Hamblin Bridge) can be seen in the distance.

Train had two locomotives, CN 2850 pulling and CN 3180 mid-train. Neenah's Southpark Industrial Center (industrial park is too plebeian for oft ostentatious Neenah) is partially visible in the background to the left. A remnant of the C&NW main line runs parallel on the other side of the tree line to the left of the train. The yellow silo in the background belongs to American Colloid Co., 901 Acco Ave., an active rail customer.

CN, former MILW, Rails at Kiel, WI
Title:  CN, former MILW, Rails at Kiel, WI
Description:  Looking northwest along the CN, former MILW, rails from Fremont St. at Kiel, WI, on 30 May '20. To the left are remnants of a spur which once served several rail served businesses. Land O'Lakes Industrial Cheese, 1125 8th St., can be seen in the background to the right. They used to receive rail service, but I don't think they have for a while. Maybe the recent expansion will mean renewal of rail service. According to https://www.landolakesinc.com/ on 20 Nov. '19: "At Kiel, we’ve undertaken a multi-year modernization project to allow us to make room to receive more member milk and deliver larger blocks of cheese. These infrastructure improvements include modernizing cheese making and packaging, expanding capacity and making whey processing improvements. When completed in mid-2019, Kiel will be able to handle 3.2 million pounds of milk per day and produce both 40-pound and 640-pound blocks of cheese."

Something old, something new...
Title:  Something old, something new...
Description:  Looking southeast at the CN rails from the intersection of Towmen Rd. and Ehlers Rd. at Shawano Junction, Fox Crossing, Winnebago Co., WI (formerly Town of Menasha, Winnebago Co., WI, from 1855 until 14 Apr. 2016) on 5 Jun. '20. Some brand new signals have recently been installed, waiting to take over for the old signals. This spot used to be named Fox River Junction, after several segments of the original C&NW main line through Menasha and Neenah were removed and a turnout was installed here which allows the bypass of missing C&NW rails by using former SOO rails. The track in the foreground is the former SOO main line. The track in the background forms the transition to the former C&NW rails.

IC 9568
Title:  IC 9568
Description:  A CN local parallels Union St. and approaches the Main St. overpass as it heads north at the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI, on 6 Jun. '20. The parking lot to the left of the train was the site of the WC (later SOO) depot, built on the north side of Sherry St. on the east side of the tracks in 1891. It replaced the ca. 1871 depot that stood at the west end of Wisconsin Ave. The Sherry St. depot was demolished ca. 1955 when a new depot was built between Main St. and N. Lake St. on the west leg of the wye, about 850 ft. to the northwest. The historic Murer House, 432 Sherry St., is partially visible above the locomotive's cab. It was built by Felix Murer in 1892 and is currently home to Sherry Town Station. The area between the tracks and Union St., from Main St. to Monroe St., used to be the yard. I don't know when the current, significantly larger yard (extending southwestward from Winneconne Ave.) was built, but a map from 1909 shows the yard still here.

Description:  A CN local traverses the west leg of the wye and passes the Main St. overpass as it heads northwest at the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI, on 6 Jun. '20. Local had one locomotive, IC 9568, with some unique, expedient hand-stenciling. The area between the tracks and Union St., from Main St. to Monroe St., used to be the yard. I don't know when the current, significantly larger yard (extending southwestward from Winneconne Ave.) was built, but a map from 1909 shows the yard still here. In the background, beyond the north leg of the wye, lies Arrowhead Park, a closed paper sludge landfill. Before the landfill was opened in the '50s, the south shore of Little Lake Butte des Morts came right up to the north leg of the wye. A large quantity of fill is being added to the eastern half of the park, in preparation of future improvements. The Fox Valley Energy Center (formerly Minergy Fox Valley Glass Aggregate Plant) dominated the eastern half of the landfill/park from its opening in Jan. '98 until demolition was completed in the spring of '16.
