Album Info:WSOR and CP (Or CPKC, since April 2023) trains on this rickety ex-Milwaukee Road branchline that connects Madison with Watertown. WSOR serves the local industries from the east side of Madison to Clasen Quality Choclate in Watertown; CP has trackage rights for ballast trains to the Michels transload site just east of Waterloo.

Description:  There are three signalized grade crossings on the line between the ballast transload and the junction with the main at Watertown. Two of them are some of the few remaining in southern Wisconsin, even on branch lines, with the old-school 8" diameter incandescent lights.

Title:  WAMX 3947 In Your Face
Description:  Normally this perspective is frowned upon, but the train is parked with no crew and the engines shut down. 3947 was the first addition that Watco made to the locomotive fleet on the WSOR system back in spring of 2014. It was soon joined by 3928 (As built, those two were sequentially numbered on the D&H and again on the UP), which received a WSOR 35th Anniversary scheme in the early summer of 2015 (the last with the thin chevron stripes on the short hood). 3947 remained in hideous patched UP yellow until the spring of 2017.

Description:  The trailing unit is one of two Helm (HLCX) units currently active on the WSOR system. It was built as a Ferrocarriles Nacionales de México SD40, since upgraded to SD40-2 standards. It is also one of very few (may be the last) units left in the maroon and blue paint scheme.

Description:  Leaving trackage rights over WSOR's Waterloo Sub, which CP acquired in 1998 after they sold the line to WSOR in order to retain access to the "Michels Pit" ballast transload site. 6302 is one of the first of the ten "SD60-3"rebuilds done at NRE Silvis, completed just before the "Golden Beaver" paint scheme was reintroduced late in 2017.

Description:  I was pleasantly surprised to find out that CP is giving at least a few of their SD40-2s the new Golden Beaver dip, along with PTC capability that makes them able to lead on U.S. mainlines once again. Also notice the DMVW car first up in the train, the previous day a westbound CP manifest had three ex-CN SD60Fs heading for service on that road.

Description:  A number of the SD40-2s received fresh coats of "Golden Beaver" paint a little over a year ago, and began appearing on these ballast and other MoW trains (post-merger in 2023, often sharing such duties with KCS SD70MACs, of all things). I had yet to catch one leading until now, and I wasn't going to pass up the opportunity to get a matching pair!

Description:  After rounding the tight curve on the west leg of the wye, the train will run parallel to the Watertown Sub main for a couple miles before joining the double track CTC territory at Watertown West. The switch used to be in Watertown proper, but was moved following a derailment in fall 2015. Prior to that, it used to be standard practice for these trains to run the power around and shove out onto the main via the east wye switch before heading west.
