Praha Hlavni Nadrazi In A Snowy Haze (B&W version, date is a guess) |
Description: |
Here's another station shot. :-) I originally shot this with Ektachrome E100GX, one of the nicest color films you can buy if you can't get Kodachrome 64 or 200. On this particular day, though, during the Prague snowstorm two weekends ago, Hlavni Nadrazi, the main train station, was so obscured in the snow that the scene was, for practical purposes, a black and white scene. Seeing the scans of my two brackets, I decided to go with the lighter and hazier one for dramatic effect, and oddly, convert it to black and white. Why not? I think it looks better this way. Maybe some of you can tell me what you think, and I can consider uploading other versions of this. |

CD Class 810 Railbus On Zelecnicni Most |
Description: |
I had walked the entire length of the Zelecnicni Most from east to west, had seen no trains whatsoever, and was just turning back when I got lucky and caught this. Okay, so it's a railbus and not a proper train, but I was still happy to get it. |

CD 363130-6 On Zelecnicni Most (date is a guess) |
Description: |
As I was walking along the Zelecnicni Most to the East, the sun went behind a cloud, casting Prague into gloom. In response, I switched my Lomo to 1/60 and f5.6, worried that I wouldn't get anything otherwise. The result was that when this Rychlik came rumbling over the bridge, I took the shot, and it was so overexposed as to be abstract. I played with it in Photoshop, though, and got this what I think is beautful Lomo shot with the aura of the sun in from of the train, grit all around, and the feeling of the awesome power that is a train. :-) The irony is that 363 130-6 is a very clean, green, electric locomotive. |

Setting Sunlight On CD 371003-5 At Nadrazi Holesovice |
Description: |
I took many, many different versions of this shot while waiting for the "Hungaria" to take me to Berlin. This locomotive would be our power, but for the moment it was waiting for the train to arrive with Slovak power on the point. The lighting was what struck me more than anything, though, as Class 371s are a dime a dozen in Holesovice. |

Sunset Over Nadrazi Holesovice |
Description: |
I shot this while waiting for a train to Bradford, England. YES! REALLY!! I'm sick of airlines losing my luggage. Anyway, I would have to take six trains, actually, one from here to Berlin, a couchette from Berlin to Brussels, the Eurostar Brussels to London Waterloo, the Underground Waterloo to King's Cross, a GNER Intercity 225 to Leeds, and finally a First Northern local to Bradford Interchange. I don't know if it was the longest train trip I ever took, but it was certainly one of the longest. In any case, I hope you like this sunset!! :-) |

ex-CSD#498.022 Passing Krivoklat |
Description: |
This was also on the day of the Krivoklat steam excursion, and this was our locomotive, ex-CSD #498.022. The 498 Class was supposedly the fastest Czech steam locomotive class of all time with a speed record of 162Km/h in 1964, set by #498.106 "Albatros." This locomotive is often mistaken for #498.106 "Albatros," and is even misrepresented in the literature promoting steam trips in the Czech Republic, partly because the locomotives are sisters in the same class. This three-car train, incidentally, was NOT our train, as our train was closer to 42 cars, if I'm remembering right. 498.022 didn't stop this time, as it had to go fetch the rest of the train before backing into the station again. |

CSD Coal Stove |

CSD used coal stoves for heating surprisingly late in their history, and this ancient-looking, wooden, 4-wheel, coal-heated passenger car actually is only from the early-1940s, being built during World War II, of course. These very old-fashioned cars also served well into the modern-era, and can be seen in 1970s and 1980s Czech movies. |

Smoking Train Stoves, Nadrazi Branik |
Description: |
These vintage coaches, partly of wooden construction, would form the consist for the steam excursion to Krivoklat that I posted photos from a few months ago. I took these photos largely to illustrate their coal-fired heating stoves, as although they were built during World War II, they were about 70 years out of date even then, with these stoves for heating, as well as, usually, four-wheel wooden construction. |

Local Train At Nadrazi Branik |
Description: |
Here's a typical local headed for either Dobris or Cercany (more likely the former) via Branik. The locomotive is, from the looks of it a Class 714 diesel, and the coaches are 010 Class four-wheel coaches based on the 810 Class railbus. The smoke coming from the coaches on the siding is from the coal heating stoves in them, as they are indeed vintage steam-era coaches. |

Description: |
This was at the time that 498.022 was back further on the bridge out of Branik, but I don't know exactly what order this one is in. I'm fairly certain that the previous shot was of it pulling out, and this was after it was stopped or nearly in place before heading back in. |

Description: |
I wasn't able to get a proper "firearms" view of the drivers on 498.022 because of all the people around, but I was able at least to get this shot. |

Piston Valve Assembly On ex-CSD 498.022 |
Description: |
The title is self explanatory. Otherwise, it only makes sense to explain this in response to questions, which would as often as not pertain to steam locomotives as Skoda 4-8-2s. :-) |

Krivoklat Destination Board On Excursion Train |
Description: |
Unfortunately I don't have the number of this coach handy, but it was one of the old 1940's-era 4-wheel coaches pictured earlier. Note that in Europe even the steam excursions have destination boards!! :-) |

CD 749162-4 |
Description: |
Those local diesel services in and out of Cercany which are not handled by 810 railbuses are usually operated by Russian double-decker coaches pulled by Class 742 and 749 diesels, which are getting quite old at this point, along with the cars. Here #749 162-4 sits in Cercany, ready to depart for Praha Hlavni Nadrazi via Vrane nad Vltavou. |
