ATSF Tug Boat "Hastings"
Title:  ATSF Tug Boat "Hastings"
Description:  Because the Santa Fe had no direct rail connection to the San Francisco Peninsula, the railroad rostered a fleet of three tugboats to ferry cars on barges across San Francisco Bay. The last of these three, the “Paul P. Hastings,” sits at the China Basin car float on June 24th, 1986. The tugboat was built in 1945 at Point Pleasant, West Virginia by the Marietta Manufacturing Company, and was acquired by the Santa Fe in February 1948 (and named for a Santa Fe Railroad executive, who was the VP of Uraffic when he retired in 1941). and was used until the railroad discontinued service to San Francisco in 1984. After the tug sat unused at China Basin for years, it was sold and eventually ended up seeing service again and renamed “Terminator.” On January 27th, 1992, follouing a collision with a cable-laying ship, the “Terminator” sank off Point Arena (about 100 miles north of San Francisco) in water about a mile deep.

UP 3046 - North Platte, NE - 10/7/86
Title:  UP 3046 - North Platte, NE - 10/7/86
Description:  Before production began on EMDs new line of 645-engine diesels, there were various test bed diesels constructed. Commonly called SD40X diesels (and, less commonly, SDX40s) by railfans, EMD simply referred to these as SD40s, even though they differed from production SD40s in many ways - such as being built on SD35 frames, having SD45-style flared radiators (on the first four only) and having a unique AR10 alternator electrical system. On October 7, 1986, Union Pacific 3045 and 3046 were found working the hump at the railroads Bailey Yard in North Platte, Nebraska. These were two of the six "SD40X" diesels built by EMD and later sold to the UP following their demonstration runs. Union Pacific 3045 was originally EMD 434F and UP 3046 was the former EMD 434G; each built in April 1965 and sold to the UP in February 1966. Two years and 16 days after this photo was shot, UP 3046 would be retired. Flared radiator 3045 would soldier on until October 1991.

BN 7151
Title:  BN 7151
Description:  An eastbound Burlington Northern freight, led by a quartet of SD40-2s, makes crew change in McCook, Nebraska, on August 20th, 1987. McCook, in southwestern Nebraska, is the division point where the Colorado Division meets the Nebraska Division, and it is also where the time changes from Central Time to Mountain Time (on the railroad - the actual time zone border is roughly 50 miles further west). The large, brick station was constructed by the Chicago Burlington & Quincy in 1925 (replacing a station built in 1882) and, once a stop for the famed "California Zephyr," remains a stop for Amtraks "California Zephyr.".

Description:  The morning sun glints off the side of westbound Amtrak "San Joaquin" #710 as it crosses the drawbridge at Middle River on June 21, 1988. As it races across the Santa Fe line that crosses Californias delta region in the northern part of the state, passenger enjoy scenery that is vastly different from most of their trip up Californias San Joaquin Valley from Bakersfield. ATSF 347C - Pasadena, CA - 2/7/89
Title:  ATSF 347C - Pasadena, CA - 2/7/89
Description:  Santa Fe had visions of a company museum, and was wise enough to hang onto a variety of locomotives with that in mind. It never happened, of course, and the collection was donated to the California State Railroad Museum in Sacramento. Among those engines was an A-B set of F-units, painted in the Yellow Warbonnet colors they wore at retirement. In the late 1980s, the Santa Fe wanted to create some films promoting their upcoming Superfleet intermodal service, and the filmmakers wanted some classic Santa Fe power for some of the scenes (which would then dissolve into contemporary scenes as the train passed). The Santa Fe arranged to use the Museum’s Fs, and as part of the deal, the Santa Fe would restore them cosmetically for the Museum – painting them back into the iconic red and silver Warbonnet scheme. (Interestingly, the 347C never wore the Warbonnet colors with that number, as it was repainted into the Yellow Warbonnet scheme when renumbered from it’s second number - 306C. It was originally ATSF 39C.) The Fs are seen here posing in front of the Pasadena, California, passenger station during some of that filming. These days, the Fs are back at the Museum in Sacramento, the Santa Fe is no more and this line through Pasadena is much more active, albeit with light rail vehicles, as the Los Angeles Metro Gold Line. And the restoration of these Fs was the seed that led to the repainting of Santa Fe’s FP45 into red and silver Superfleet colors, which then carried over to the roads new GP60Ms, Dash 8-40BWs, GP60Bs, Dash 8-40CWs, Dash 9-44CWs and SD75Ms. The early ‘90s were a great time to be trackside on the Santa Fe!

ATSF 101 - San Bernardino, CA - 7/4/89
Title:  ATSF 101 - San Bernardino, CA - 7/4/89
Description:  On July 4, 1989, Santa Fe debuted a pair of FP45s in the return of the Warbonnet scheme. With a little imagination, it was easy to image what it was like in 1967 when these handsome engines first arrived in San Bernardino, California, fresh from EMDs La Grange, Illinois, factory. A little judicious framing with the stations ivy covered columns, and the larger lettering on the 1989 version was eliminated from view.
