Once CP acquired the D&H, they made a big deal of the fact that they now had a through route for grain traffic from the midwest to the Atlantic in the United States, though part of that route was through Canada. They dubbed it the "Niagara Connection" for its border crossing at Niagara Falls. The first "official" train, complete with power from the three component roads, D&H 7309 leading, had a press release and ceremony noting its crossing at Niagara, even though the trains actually started running between Minneapolis and Albany the previous October. We see the first train at Dalton NY, near MP 352. I was travelling from Buffalo with some colleagues from work, so this was the only photo I was able to get. |

Actually, I used to see it all the time. Signal 216-2, the distant signal for CP Johnson, was easy to see, just hard to photograph. You could see it from the NY 201 overpass to the west, but stopping there to take a picture was out of the question due to traffic. This was a walk in from the old Broad St crossing. I wish I had done it a little more often. The offset lights were a peculiarity of northeastern railroading not seen much in other parts of the country. HAN 1X passes on its way to Buffalo. |

It was not uncommon for P&LE power to come into Buffalo over the NS on coal trains originating in southwest PA. It had once been common for their power to run into Binghamton, and sometimes on to New England. By this time, P&LE wos in trouble, and their pover did not venture beyond Buffalo often. Heres a couple of units at SK. Note the D&H plow peeking out behind 2039 |

One of the better looking stations on the Tier was the Erie station at Silver Springs, which was used by the MOW department, and kept in pretty good shape. The diesel, though in battered paint, still looks good, as any Alco did in 1991. |
