Album Info:Photos taken at Bellerose NY on the LIRR. I was the organist for the First Church of Christ, Scientist in Jamaica for several years. After church on Sunday, I'd usually spend an hour or so at Bellerose, since there were a group of diesel trains that ran mid day, as well as the occasional freight. I went other times as well, as it was a good spot to see Main Line action at the east end of Queens interlocking, and the lighting was good most of the day.

Title:  Not too many beachgoers today

Ronkonkoma train
Title:  Ronkonkoma train
Description:  About an hour after 4012 rolled through, this Ronkonkoma train-4252, I believe-came east with a more standard set of a single GP 38, six or seven cars, and an FA(most of the time). Always fun to watch it bounce through the switches at Queens. In the background, RF 57 heads down the middle track toward Jamaica and Fresh Pond.

MP 15 and parlors
Title:  MP 15 and parlors
Description:  Train 4012 was the mid day weekend train to Montauk. It often ran to 14 cars, due to its function to return parlor cars to the east end for Sunday night and Monday morning trains. An MP 15 was typically used as a power pack on this train, as we see at Bellerose.

January 18 will be the first day of electric service to Ronkonkoma, making these trains mostly a memory. An FA brings up the rear of train 4252-for now.

Equipment move
Title:  Equipment move
Description:  Looking like 4012, a Montauk train with a long consist, this equipment move rolls east on the Main Line past Bellerose. The giveaway that its not 4012 is the MP 15 on the east end-4012 almost always had a pair of GP 38s, with an MP 15 on the rear; and that there are no parlors on this train.

In three weeks, Id be moving to Binghamton, and would not be camped out on the platform at Bellerose most Sundays, though I will be back to visit from time to time. Train 4012 will roll on, however, and todays is typical for the season: a pair of GP 38s with a cut of parlors head out, and about 14 cars for Montauk.

Montauk bound
Title:  Montauk bound
Description:  I found myself in New York for my cousins wedding. Naturally, it was a chance to go back to some old haunts to check out the action. One was Bellerose, where it appeared things had not changed much in the year since I moved upstate. A pair of GP 38s rolls a long train east. Today, though, instead of the usual MP 15 power pack, there is an FA on the rear.

Ronkonkoma electric
Title:  Ronkonkoma electric
Description:  The electrification to Ronkonkoma had been opened 18 months prior to this shot, and MUs were now routinely plying the Main Line east, as this train is doing, blowing past Bellerose on its way to the pine barrens. In the distance, there's another MU train, this one from Huntington. You can see why I liked coming here.

Port Jeff train for Jamaica
Title:  Port Jeff train for Jamaica
Description:  A nort Jeff train rolls toward Jamaica and NY/Brooklyn connections behind an ex MILW F. Here's another variation on the cab unit paint scheme-the bow wave. Long a standard diagram on cab uniJs, this was the first unit on the LIRR to get the standard form of it. They were always tweaking the paint on these units, this is just another example.

New paint
Title:  New paint
Description:  One of the new developments since I moved away from NY City five years earlier was a retro paint scheme, somewhat similar to the New York State colors used from the mid 60s, when MTA took over the railroad from the Pennsy, til 1977 when the blue and white scheme was adopted. Here, MP 15 161 rolls away from the camera in the new scheme on its way to Oyster Bay.

Inbound from Ronkonkoma
Title:  Inbound from Ronkonkoma
Description:  I moved away from the NY area in mid 1988, and did not get a lot of action on the newly electrified Ronkonkoma trains. Hard to tell apart from all the other MUs at this location, but this is one of the Ronkonkoma trains rolling past Bellerose and toward Penn Station with a typical set of cars. One of the oldest M 1's leads. Spring is upon the Island, as th flowers are in bloom and the trees are still in their bright green stage.
