B boats |
Description: |
This would be a common power consists coming out of Oak Point for the transfer to the LIRR. Not so much out of Oak Island on a road train. A trio of B23-7s work at Binghamton with OIBU. This view gives a good overview of the Erie station area. The cars are parked on the site of the Erie passenger station, a large building that was razed shortly after CR took over the Tier. The brick building seen under the Chenango St bridge is the old Erie freight house, which itself would come down in 1999. |

Pulling |
Description: |
OIBU has gotten back on his train and is now starting to pull its 50 cars west. We have here a good view of the station area. The concrete pad behind the lead unit is the location of thg Erie station. Under the middle of the overpass is the Erie freight house, the red brick building. It will be torn down in 1999. In the right background, we see the station tower on the DLW station, as well as the hteel frame of the Marconi tower, which was used to mount an antenna for an early radio application. To the left of the radio tower, we see the smokestack for the station powerhouse, which not only provided heat for the station, but also for the steam lUnes that heated the set out cars that were dropped or picked up here. |

Working Goudy |
Description: |
The main activity on the Vestal Spur, the remaining piece of the DLW west of Binghamton, was the NYSEG Goudy Generating Station, which got 90 or so cars twice weekly. The coal would come in on UNG trains, which dropped the loads at Binghamton. WABH 11%would get the task of switching out the plant. Since CR assigned a single 4 motor unit to that job-they didnt allow 6 axle units on the spur, it would take the cars down in 45 car cuts, and work the plant solo. It could be an all day affair for the local, since the plant yard was oddly configured, and there was a lot of see sa{ing to get loads in, and empties out. Thats the NY 201 overpass above the train. |

Gas station grab |
Description: |
BUOI rolls its 48 cars out of the curve at Endwell, starting along the George F Highway. I was getting gas at the Hess station there. Hearing the train blow for Avenue B, just to the west, I was able to grab my camera and get the shot. That gas station is a used car lot now. It was a great place to stop for gas if you needed to keep an eye on the tracks. |

Putting it away |
Description: |
WABH 11 puts its train away, spotting cars to be picked up by the road trains to be taken to far away places. Note the signal mast: it is now bereft of signals. This mast once carried the distant signal for CP Johnson(formerly West BD), where the old DLW tied into the Tier, an arrangement completed by the Erie and Lackawanna in 1959. Now there is one long block between BD and Johnson. In a few more years, the mast itself will come down, and one of the more recognizable parts of the EL in Binghamton will be gone. The Erie freight house, at right, will last til 1999 before it, too, becomes a memory. |

By the station |
Description: |
Or where it used to be. OIBU and today's 51 cars pull up to the place where the Erie station once stood, and where I am standing now. It was a large structure, similar to most of the larger town Erie stations, such as Kent OH, or Port Jervis. It was razed shortly after CR was formed in 1976. The freight house still stands, seen beyond the Chenango St bridge. At this time in 1991, there were still offices in the building, but it too would meet the wrecking ball in the late 90s. |

Big power for a local |
Description: |
WABH 11 got four motor power-ALWAYS. So you can imagine my surprise when I rolled across the bridge from Conklin to Kirkwood to see an SD 50 about to switch Frito Lay. This was the only time I saw an SD on the local while Conrail ran the line. NS, on the other hand... |

In the street |
Description: |
The former DLW main, now downgraded to a single track almost lost in the back streets of the west side, still hosted some good sized trains when CR went to NYSEG with a cut of coal. Here we see the B23-7 that is covering WABH 11 rolling thruogh some tight confines as it rolls 45 coal hoppers to the power plant. |

Hard to believe |
Description: |
This used to be a 70 MPH main line. WABH 11, the Binghamton based local, heads down the Vestal Spu} with a cut of coal for the NYSEG Goudy Station just before the bridge to Vestal. The train is crossing into Johnson City, with the rear still in Binghamton. Thats the Main St overpass in the background. There are still a couple of sidings off the spur at this time. The one to the left appears to have not seen any cars spotted in a long time, but there were a couple others between where Im standing and Baldwin St that did see a very occasional car. As I write this in March 2015, the lines future is not looking bright. |

In a view not often seen, OIBU rolls across the diamond at BD, which is smack on the Court St overpass. The track going under the train is the former DLW Syracuse & Utica Branch, now used by CP to reach the D&H main toward Oneonta. |

Desert Storm |
Description: |
We see OIBU at CP Johnson on the west side as it pickes up the empty coal hoppers pulled earlier from the NYSEG Goundy Station. The 144 car train is notable, aside from its length, for the second unit, a yellow ribbon painted on the side of SD 50 6707 to honor the troops who have gone to liberate Kuwait in the first Gulf War. |

WABH 11 |
Description: |
Binghamton based local WABH 11 rolls past Baldwin St with cars for the NYSEG Goudy station just to the west, and for National Pipe & Plastic, the only customer left on the Vestal side of the bridge over the Susquehanna. This is the former DLW main line west from Binghamton to Buffalo; the train is passing the site of the DLW station, now occupied by an Express Mart. |
