Description: |
When the Rayville State Bank building was constructed in 1904 it faced the main line of the Vicksport Shreveport & Pacific. By the time this photo was taken, it faced the main line of MidSouth Rail and no longer housed a bank, but it still retained much of its character. |

This was a view from the north end of MidSouth Rail's BALLGROUND YARD near the Mississippi community of that name. The yard was built by the Illinois Central c. 1967 to serve a new International Paper mill just to the south. This was on a 29-mile line opened between Valley and Redwood Junction in 1967 as the REDWOOD DISTRICT and was the last major line constructed by the IC. Most of the district was abandoned in 1975, but the southern end remained in place to service the paper mill. |

This was a view looking north along the Wax Lake Outlet, from the Southern Pacific and U.S. Highway 90 bridges towards the Atchafalaya Basin in St. Mary Parish, Louisiana. The other structures in the photos were aerial pipeline crossings. The 13-mile channel - also known as the Calumet Cut – was completed in 1942 to provide an additional outlet from the Atchafalaya Basin to the Gulf of Mexico. The railroad bridge consists of three 400-foot thru riveted truss spans, with a 70-foot deck plate girder at each end. It is located on the SUNSET ROUTE near milepost 91, about 11#miles west of Morgan City, Louisiana. |

This northbound empty Canadian National-Illinois Central coal train was at the north end of FRENIER SIDING (milepost 887.3 ), about 30 miles north of New Orleans. The 150-car train had an ET44AC on each end, 3027 on the front and 3235 pushing on the rear, and was on its way from the Rail-Marine Terminal Co. terminal on the Mississippi River at Convent, Louisiana back to a mine in Illinois. It had just met the southbound CITY OF NEW ORLEANS. |
