557 and a semaphore |
Description: |
The signal at MP 247 was fairly easy to get to-there was a maintenance road access right off NY 17C, all you had to know was where to turn, and have a long lens ready. It was one of a half dozen Erie semaphores still standing at that time. They would last into the 21st century. Here we see a 557 rolling west behind a typical mix of a GP9u and SD40. |

Big Alco |
Description: |
M 630 4563 rolls KL 1 solo approaching Gang Mills yard. after running around Corning on the relocated(1951) Erie main. Six axle Alcos were not common on the Tier, and a solo unit was really unusual. |

Always good to see an Alco |
Description: |
Even if its trailing. A C424 is in second place today, but will be leading tomorrows 557 west. It is about to pass under NY 17C in west Endicott. C424's were not uncommon on the 557/558 trains, but mostly it got an SD40/GP9 combination. Six axle MLW's were more commonly seen on the D&H going north, though they did appear on the Tier from time to time. |

558 past the detector |
Description: |
Train 558 passes the site of the hot box detector on its last lap into Binghamton. The EL had a hot box detector here on track 1; the cabin in the foreground housed the equipment. When it had a hit, it would set the next westbound automatic signal yellow, and the one after that red. |

Across the field |
Description: |
After following NY 70 for about 12 miles from Canaseraga, the tracks veer away as they approach the Portage Bridge in Letchworth State Park, taking a more direct path than the road. We see 261 just east of Dalton as it starts this approach behind SOO and GATX units with 62 TOFC. |

Out of the valley |
Description: |
CP 261 rolls past the new, but not yet active, signals at CP HORN, replacing the old Erie lights there as part of the single tracking project. This marks what was the east end of Hornell yard, ZY on the EL. This was once a major yard and shop on the EL, now only a few tracks, and the shop an ABB complex that rehabs transit and commuter cars. |

By the barn |
Description: |
Train 271 with 53 freight and a pair of TOFC flats rolls past this old barn and silo between NY 17C and the tracks, a typically pastoral scene in the Tier. The barn has since collapsed. How about that LEF&C box behind the power!! |

SOO and NYSW power head west |
Description: |
One of the great things for a railfan about the transition from directed service by the NYSW to the CP was the unlikely power mixes. Who ever figured a small regional like NYSW would have its power in the same consists with SOO units?? Yet, here it is.... |
