Bread and Cheese for lunch |
Description: |
A westbound Port Jefferson train crosses the steel bridge at Bread and Cheese Hollow Rd, so named for the food carried by John Smith on his day long ride to establish the town of Smithtown in the 1600s. Legend is the local Native Americans would grant him all the land he could ride around on a bull in a days time. The road below, a trail in those days, was part of his route. Today there are almost no Natives in the area any more, but the name persists. Id bet most LIRR riders are unaware of the history of the road under the bridge. |

Protect power |
Description: |
The Long Island kept these two engines on a tail track at Harold in Long Island City. They were equipped with MU couplers so they could go into the East River tunnels and pull out a stranded train in the event of a failure or emergency. Theyre headed to Jamaica for servicing, here passing Fresh Pond yard on the Montauk Branch. They would get repainted in a few years into an attractive retro 1960's scheme, dark blue with orange ends. |

Rolling on the south shore |
Description: |
Most Montauk trains ran the Central Branch and the Main Line via Hicksville, though if they did not have any stops(some made Mineola, and at least one south shore train during the week made Bethpage), the dispatcher had his choice of routes. This Montauk train was one of those, and we see it rolling west through Valley Stream on its way to city connections at Jamaica. Valley tower, at right of the train, controls the tracks going off to the right, the Far Rockaway Branch, and a connection to the West Hempstead Branch, which diverges to the left out of the photo beyond the train of M 1's in the distance. |

Wrong main |
Description: |
The Oyster Bay train at left is making its stop as usual on track 2. The train of M 1's is also eastbound, the two trains taking part in a dance that plays out every weekday afternoon here. The MU's are an eastbound all stops train from New York to Hicksville, which is planned to take track 1. The Oyster Bay train comes out from Jamaica on track 2, making Mineola as its first stop. While he does his station work, the MU train comes in and makes his stop. He has a stop signal on the Mineola Blvd overpass, which I am standing under. While the MU's do their work, the Oyster Bay train finishes, and takes a restricting signal to go up the branch, in front of the MU train. Once he's clear, the MU's get the signal on track 1, and resume their progress to Hicksville. Meanwhile, there are no westbound trains for about an hour while the LIRR uses both tracks eastbound between Queens and Divide. It was quite a show. |
