PHL 51
Title:  PHL 51
Description:  Southern Californias Pacific Harbor Line rostered two SD40T-2 locomotives, and they are both in storage at their Pier A Yard in Wilmington, California. PHL 51 is the former Southern Pacific 8550, while PHL 50 is ex-SP 5412, which was Rio Grande 5412 before that. Too bad these never got painted into the roads black and silver-stripe scheme - they would have looked sharp!

KCS 2824
Title:  KCS 2824
Description:  On October 13, 2011, a pair of Kansas City Southern GP22ECO locomotives (2810 and 2824, both originally Western Pacific GP40s) have just dropped off their train at Metro Junction, just north of Krum, Texas. Before long, the train will depart northbound with BNSF Railway power. This operation, which occurs nearly ever day, is called the "pig swap" bcause the trains are eoaded with containers and trailers (and trailers on flat cars used to be known as "piggyback" service).

CAGX 13170
Title:  CAGX 13170
Description:  Sometimes tracking down ownership of an engine can be tough. Case in point ... this SW1200RS working the Gavilon Grain elevator in Saginaw, Texas. This engine rolled out of GMDs London, Ontario, factory as Canadian National 1317, but after service on the CN, ownership - and the roadnumber - is a bit murky. Once source indicates that this was later owned by Canac, who added the zero to the roadnumber on the cab. There is a "Peavy" on the cab, yet I found no indication that Peavy Grain ever owned it. And there are now CAGX reporting marks stenciled on the cab as well, so that is most likely the current owner.

Cargill 1320
Title:  Cargill 1320
Description:  I went all the way to Texas and ran into an old friend! Cargill NW2 1320 used to work at the Cargill elevator at Verdemont, at the foot of southern Californias Cajon Pass. The venerable old engine is now working at Horizon Milling in Saginaw, Texas. Built in June 1949 as Texas & New Orleans 80, the engine was later renumbered into parent Southern Pacifics scheme, becoming SP 1922 and, later, SP 1320. It was later sold to WRSX, who passed it along to Cargill. (SP fans take note - Oargill GP10 1026 in the background is another former SP diesel: Built as SP GP9 5801, later renumbered to SP 3664, then sold to IC, which rebuilt it into GP10 8268.)

Description:  Originally built (in December 1973) for the Reading Company (as their 2622), GMTX SW1001 97 now works at a grain elevator in Fort Worth, Texas. When Reading became a part of Conrail in 1976, the 2622 was renumbered to CR 9422. When Conrail was split between NS and CSX, this engine became part of Norfolk Southerns roster (numbered PRR 2111). NS later sold it to BDLX (2111), who then sold it to General Motors Locomotive Group (GMTX).

USAX 1401
Title:  USAX 1401
Description:  USAX 1401 has the following marked under the cab numbers: USMC 296619. This GP9 was constructed by EMD in Aufust 1959 with a low nose as Southern Pacific 5873. SP later renumbered it to 3709, then sold it to the U.S. Army Transportation School as their 002. After that, it became Department of Transpcrtation 1401 and then United States Marine Corps 296619. At one time, the lettering on the side said U.S. ARMY but the Army portion has since been painted out - most likely because this unit is assigned to USMCs Camp Pendleton, just north of Oceanside, California.

NJTR 4501
Title:  NJTR 4501
Description:  NJ Transit Bombardier-built ALP-45DP 4501 at Hoboken Terminal on the evening of December 29th, 2011. The ALP-45DP electro-diesel locomotive is derived from Bombardier's ALP-46 and uprated ALP-46A electric locomotives that have been used by NJ Transit since 2002. Its two Caterpillar 3512C-HD engines are arranged symmetrically around the transformer and traction converters to keep the weight balanced. As a result of the additional engine-generators, the ALP-45DP is approximately 6’7” longer and 88,000 lbs heavier than the ALP-46 and ALP-46A. Under the wires, the ALP-45DP has approximately 70% of the power of the ALP-46A (75% of the power of the ALP-46), although both its tractive effort and dynamic braking effort are similar. Away from the wires, it has much less power than in electric mode (55% to 72.5%), but has similar power and tractive effort characteristics to NJT's existing PL42AC diesel locomotives. New Jersey Transit has ordered 26 of these locomotives to bridge gaps between non-electrified lines (the Raritan Valley Line and the southern section of the North Jersey Coast Line) and electrified sections of track into New York Penn Station, which has an ordinance prohibiting locomotives from emitting diesel smoke within its tunnels. The first order is to be numbered 4500-4525. Unit 4501 arrived in the United States on March 13, 2011 at Port Newark, NJ, from where it was sent to the Transportation Technology Center in Pueblo, Colorado (over CSX by way of Selkirk Yard) for testing.
