BNSF 7454
Title:  BNSF 7454
Description:  BNSF 7454 tailend of the double pushers on this soon-to-be eastbound mixed freight in the middle of the crossing splashing through the rain. I take the lack of exhaust shimmer confirmation neither of the DPU sisters were active. And before folks make fun of the grain and slight blur, please note the glow of the lights - pocket snappers arent really meant to shoot in the dark on the way to church (albeit the LONG way to church, having accidentally taken the wrong turn to go through the station area - not exactly on-the-way on the way to church, if you get the general meaning).

BNSF 5170
Title:  BNSF 5170
Description:  BNSF 5170 first DPU at the rear of a now northbound line of covered hoppers... and continued oddities in our area with the growing number of double pusher units at the tailend... combine that with the sun and you have a mixed up world in our area. That or someone is just messing with me.

BNSF 6331
Title:  BNSF 6331
Description:  BNSF 6331 breaking the at-grade crossing coming off the eastbound leg of her journey moving onto northbound lanes through the wye with covered hoppers under morning sun (and on the wrong side of the crossing... but I wasnt going to complaining having pulled up just moments before this shot and being able to get out of the car door and not step into autumn wind and rain was quite the welcome change from previous years.

BNSF 9263
Title:  BNSF 9263
Description:  BNSF 9263 tailend of the double at the back of a now northbound covered hopper group, rounding out the two-at-the-front / two-at-the-back set as she continues from the east, shifting to north under morning sun. And before someone else says it - dang, that orange hazard cone is really showing up far too frequently in my shots now that Santa is watching and I have to avoid run-ins with rail police (meaning I have to stay around the road and near the car so I can leave before being shaken down for name, rank, serial number, and "Youre doing what?" Its not easy being good around the holidays, especially when naughty includes being in legal areas, but too far from your vehicle to be able to leave before they prowl up on you.

BNSF 4532
Title:  BNSF 4532
Description:  BNSF 4532 in fourth position at the front of a steamy quad-power group... all the clouds, steam, and sheer grunt coming from number two currently further north, but completely obscuring BNSF 5455 at third place in the westbound to northbound mixed freight through the wye transition. Note 4:30PM is coming earlier by the day, fighting for every photon of light for the shot (and having marked color correction from the severe blue shift that had occurred).

Title:  BNSF 4578

AMTK 190 - AMTK 509
Title:  AMTK 190 - AMTK 509
Description:  AMTK 190 - AMTK 509 whizzing around the western part of the Vancouver wye as she comes off the Columbia River train bridge and slipping into Vancouver Amtrak Station in the driving rain in the middle of the night (at least its dark enough for it - amazing its only 4:20 / 16:20 in the early, wet winter evening. Concrete silos serving rail-river traffic in the left background, the bridge itself right background (The green light is on the bridge itself for river traffic - when it swings, the light aims up/down river, otherwise its all red along the span. I presume the green also shows the rail traffic when its been properly aligned and locked into position to prevent any unauthorized river traffic from the rail lines.) for a quick stop before proceeding northward.

AMTK 190
Title:  AMTK 190
Description:  AMTK 190 paused beyond the loading deck leading northbound red-eye... I mean, 4:15... out of Vancouver and into the blowing, blistering rain and high waters further north. A couple days after this image, I believe the passenger service through Portland was temporarily halted, bussing people around sections where passenger traffic wasnt permitted (freight was allowed by swim through).

CSX 3265
Title:  CSX 3265
Description:  CSX 3265 showing up in third at southbound double stack shooting through the station area - and its a CSX, so Im not about to let the lens being covered in rain prevent me from shooting AND posting it, dang it. Less than 15 seconds has elapsed from the time UP 8203 headlamp from the first frame hit the sensor until this one... while shooting practically in the dark with only a little pocket snapper camera... hats off to the little Canon camera. (Admitting a mild tall tale... time is correct, but I did have to release the fire button so it could refocus, so I guess it couldve continued firing, but with all the rain on the lens, re-selection was necessary to prevent it from going macro in the middle (rain on the focusing sensor)).

CSX 3357
Title:  CSX 3357
Description:  CSX 3357 as wet monkey in the middle of the southbound UP double-stack hauling bal... uh, moving quickly through the Vancouver Station area (this is only two frames away from the UP 8203 approach shot as I pretty much held down the shutter fire button and panned with the power units (station blur in the background) - dang, night photography when the subject is dancing on your toes is a bit challenging... that or its the drenched equipment, sport coat, and shower head hair that Im not demonstrating... good thing I still have 30 minutes before Church starts, Im sure I can dry out... by next Sunday. (Funny - that was somewhat optimistic.)

Description:  PNWR 2315 in the middle of three slipping past on the edge of the platform... and when youre shooting in the dark, rain no longer soaking into your clothes because youre completely saturated, and your foot is practically on the nose ladder steps, you sort of expect a little lens distortion and color shifts.

PNWR 3007
Title:  PNWR 3007
Description:  PNWR 3007 nose to the load on a southbound triple header hauling the local back home waiting for clear track on the deck of Vancouver Station... and its 4:30PM, theres no light left, a wet dog smells better than I do, Im saturated down to my Fruit-of-the-Looms, and I hope to dry out a little before having to settle into a pew for the rest of the evening, so splash back to the car to the disbelieving stare of the better-half, who has remained in the car listening to Christmas music for the past twenty minutes... and you wanna know something? Except for the fact they refused to turn on the heat in the church, I dont think I wouldve traded the evening for most anyone elses. Thanks for trains.

UP 8203 - BNSF 3156
Title:  UP 8203 - BNSF 3156
Description:  UP 8203 on point with a triple that... dang, dang, dang! Showed up WAY too quickly as we were just pulling into the parking lot and approaching far too fast to really do much other than hope the previous camera settings could hope to stop a little of the motion in no light, pouring rain, and a soaked photographer skidding onto the platform. BNSF 3156 chortling quietly to herself on the station side spur. (If anyone is interested, I have the confirmation frame shot immediately after this as I panned with the power unit - it appears as JUST the registry number and two axles in the frame, because thats how close you are when on the platform... and Im going to miss it if they ever go to a closed format on the platform like the Tri-Cities.

UP 8427
Title:  UP 8427
Description:  UP 8427 - wait, what the heck - Union Pacific running a pusher unit? Dang, I wasnt really expecting it - in fact, the building on the right of the frame is one of the Amtrak Station weather shelters on the platform where Id taken refuge to evaluate how crapped out the lens was getting... only to be interrupted by that Holy crap rumble to say youre about to miss a shot. Oh, sorry, information about the shot... on southbound pusher duty with double-stack out of Seattle, Washington bound for Portland, Oregon in the regions last-ditch effort to keep container traffic alive in the Port of Portland after the big pull-out of ship traffic from the area. Based upon the recent filing from UP with the state of Washington, were about to get several additional UP runs north-south through Vancouver in a possible shift from BNSF to UP with the Bakken oilfields oil-by-rail pipeline to the west coast ports and refining plants.
