DPP 2500, Last Russian Prague Metro Train in Radlicka,
Description:
While if I'm not mistaken this wasn't the last day for this unrebuilt Russian train to run (supposedly it was pulled from service on July 2nd, 2009), it was close to the very last. Supposedly the graffiti was cleaned off for the final run. Now these are consigned to history....sort of. The A and B lines are still worked exclusively by them in rebuilt form. The only truly recent trains on the Metro are on the C line.

CD 682007-0 in Praha Hlavni Nadrazi, Picture 3
Description:
I took this at the start of a trip I took with my aforementioned friend to Hradec Kralove. We had decided on it more or less on a whim, almost cancelling the trip because of massive flooding the previous day, which was still being cleaned up. Ultimately, although Moravia was badly damaged, Bohemia escaped well enough so that trains were running on the 26th of June, when we left. This wasnt our train, though, as Pendolinos to the East run via Pardubice, rather than Hradec, and in any case this one was for Vienna (Wien). This was the first time I had seen one in Hlavni Nadrazi, so me and my friend took several minutes to get photos and video of it. Luckily, I also had my real camera again, since I decided the occasion was worth adding to the backlog of film.

CD 750162-0 in Hradec Kralove Hlavni Nadrazi
Description:
Heres another "bespectacled" diesel locomotive, only this time a Class 750. The 750 class is simply an early-1990s rebuild of a 753. Actually, the only original bespectacled diesels were the 753 and 754 classes, so today there are some rebuilt 753 Class units, designated 753.7, and then there are the rebuilt Classes 750, 752 (not to be confused with ZSSK Class 752, which is the same class as CD Class 751), and 752.6.

CD 754048-7 at Hradec Kralove Hlavni Nadrazi
Description:
When we got to Hradec Kralove, we were treated to the sight of an old, and unrebuilt, Class 754 "bespectacled," or "Brejlovec" diesel. My friend hadn't photographed one of these yet, and I decided to take a few shots too, since I don't know how much longer they'll still be in service. I've been a bit surprised in the past year in that I've been finding these diesels more often, rather than less often, and I can't figure out why that is. Maybe it's that the allocations have changed.

Class 111 in Praha Hlavni Nadrazi
Description:
The numberplate on this Class 111 was really chewed up, or at least the paint was, so Ive found it unreadable even on the highest-res versions of this. Cameraphone limitations again... In any case, as always this locomotive wasnt our main power, as we had a diesel on the front. The route would be a really odd way to get to Ceske Budejovice, via Beroun and Zdice, that I didnt know existed until this trip. Me and my friends would ultimately get off at Jince.

Class-130 Electric Locomotive
Description:
The 1950s-era Czech electrics are gradually being phased out, with more in scrap lines everyday, but some of the later classes to be built in the same rounded style, which were built well;into the 1970s, continue to survive. Again, the bad cameraphone resolution prevents me from reading the number of this one, but you can tell its a Class 130 from the boxy blister on the top of it (Im not sure for what, as I dont have a proper manual for these). Its true that ex-CSD Class 125s have this too, but all of them are now in service on ZSSK in Slovakia, not CD. Note also"the CD Cargo logo on this Class 130, marking it at least in theory as a freight unit.

Horovice, while not a very old station as far as I know, is more or less steam-era station, and has most of its steam-era features preserved. Even better, it has far fewer broken windows and far less graffiti than the typical station, of any age, in the modern Czech Republic.

Nadrazi Praha-Vysehrad
Description:
As we left on the mainline for Beroun, our first station, as always, was Vysehrad. To the best of my knowledge, this is no longer a scheduled stop, but even though this is the case and the station is so rundown that it looks abandoned, it is still a staffed station, for whatever reason. Even more unusually, we stopped here on this trip, for what reason I dont know. As far as I can tell, theres no legal access to the tracks for the general public anymore, so it couldnt have been for passengers, or could it have?

View from Zeleznicni Most
Description:
Soon after passing Vysehrad, the main for Beroun crosses the Zeleznicni Most, the most visible of the rail bridges over the Vltava (as the others are in out-of-the-way neighborhoods). If you look out over the city, its surprising what you can see when you consider that this is a cameraphone image. Every major landmark on the west bank of the Vltava (except for Miklasky Chram) from Stadion Strahov to Prazky Hrad is at least slightly visible, encompassing the neighborhoods of Smichov, Strahov, the Mala Strana, and the Hradcany all at once.

BR Ticket in Dejvicka Metro
Description:
Ive forgotten the full details of why I was in Dejvicka on this particular day, but often this is the first Metro station I get to after flying into Praha Ruzyne airport, although such was not the case on this day. Rather, I discovered a BR (British, Network Rail, etc.) train ticket dropped on the platform. Living in a major European city post-Schengen, you see all sorts of tickets from all the EU countries lying on the ground, but I liked this one because it reminded me of Britain. It wasnt the first one I had seen, and it probably wont be the last. Ive also seen Paris and Brussels metro tickets lying on the floor of Prague Metro stations.

CSD 458004- in the Vagon Kafe
Description:
This was another preserved numberplate from a CSD Class E458 (now CD Classes 110-111) electric switcher, which I stupidly chopped off. I guess youll have to visit the cafe if you really want to know the number. The real unit may actually still be in service, since this class is alive and well, and this numberplate would now be obsolete due to reclassification.

CSD E6691129 in the Vagon Kafe
Description:
This numberplate, off of an old CSD E669 Class electric locomotive (now CD and ZSSK classes 180-183), 6691129, can be found embedded in the floor of the Vagon Kafe in the little known Pasaz EGAP, between the famous Pasaz Lucerna, and KFC. The whole cafe is decorated in a rail theme, which means that, along with the decent coffee and food, its an excellent stopover for railfans. I was actually introduced to it by a train driver, whos standing on the left.

Malostranska Metro Station
Description:
In the past two years or so, Ive noticed a really cool 19th-Century-style gas balloon (as opposed to a modern hot air balloon) thats been used for sightseeing over the Mala Strana. The last time I saw it, some idiot had thought it would be a good idea to cover it with grafitti, but this was when it still looked good, there on the upper right. The building in the foreground is the Malostranska Metro station, and the Metrocafe.

CD 714021-3
Description:
While the station makeover at Nadrazi Cercany is quite extensive, the only new trains serving Cercany in 2009 were "City Elephant" liveried Class 471 EMUs, and even they had occassionally worked the main since their introduction to the Ceske Drahy system. The traditional Class 451 and 452 "Pantograph" EMUs, in spite of many predictions that they would be eliminated, continued to cover most of the mainline local services, including the re-classified "S9" service, which was really just a continuation of the Prague-Benesov services that had been running for decades. The branchline services to Sazava, Dobris, and other such places continued to be covered mostly by Class 810 railbuses, and Class 714 diesels like this one pulling 010 Class four-wheel coaches (basically unpowered 810s). The Cercany-Prague services via Vrane nad Vltavou, incidentally, were still also worked by the very old Russian-style bi-level coaches pulled by Class 742 and 749 diesels.

Nadrazi Cercany Renovation
Description:
Luckily for those who want to see the old stations of the Prague-Ceske Budejovice route preserved, only part of the old Nadrazi Cercany building was knocked down. I dont actually know the age of this station, but you can tell from the woodwork inside that its at least steam era. What remains of the station is being fully modernized, painted, cleaned, and secured, and even in August the project was very far along. In this photo, the only visibly missing component is Kolej (Track) 1.

New Platform Looking North
Description:
The renovation of Nadrazi Cercany continued apace throughout 2009, and by the end of August the platforms were complete and Nastupiste (Platform) 2 was already operational, as seen here. The passenger subway wasnt open yet (notice the pedestrian crossing in the right background of this picture), as the concrete was still being poured and dried, and the canopy on the Nastupiste 1 still wasnt up. The track construction was looking quite good, though.

Nadrazi Senohraby
Description:
I have a number of photos of Nadrazi Senohraby on Flickr already, but this is the first one that I think I have taken from the platform (or its one of the few, anyway). The station was recently renovated almost beyond recognition by the Prague-Ceske Budejovice Corridor Reconstruction Project. Where I was standing was a giant mud pit only a year earlier, and a year before that it looked like little had changed since the 19th Century.

Im not sure if this is the same crane that Ive often seen before in Cercany, but this is the closest, best shot that Ive ever managed to get of one of these, which I consider to be really weird because of the short boom. CD 451035-0, 452005-2, and 296 in the Snow
Description:
This shot more than most that Ive done lately illustrates the advantages of shooting film. I like the shot as it was shot, but this lineup of the two different "Pantograph" EMU classes, plus the crane, is better for the internet, so I cropped. The result? The photo is more or less as good as before, in spite of having used 35mm color print film, which other than the 110 stuff that my Fisher-Price used to take, is more or less the bottom-of-the-range when it comes to film technology.

CD 452006-0 Arrival at Nadrazi Hostivar
Description:
This was my train arriving to take me to Cercany. When I flew into Prague, it was already snowing, and we were almost delayed by the weather, and a few days later Prague was still under snow, giving me the chance to take a lot of snow pictures.

CD 751004-3 and 451004 in the Snow, Picture 2
Description:
While I was waiting at the crossing for the train to come, I noticed #751004-3 deadheading 451004 on one of the main tracks, although it was stopped. There was also so MOW equipment on the consist further back. I couldnt tell if the 451 was headed for scrapping, repair, or simply another assignment, but I expect that many 451s will be scrapped soon with the arrival of new "City Elefant" EMUs. The 751 diesels are just as old, though, also dating back to the 1960s. #751004-3 still carries its CSD number on side, this being #T4781004. I dont know if this is for historic purposes (maybe its is slated for preservation), or if its simple laziness, but its interesting anyway.

Cercany Crossing in the Snow, Picture 2
Description:
I happened to be closer to the Cercany crossing (which takes the line to Sazava out of town) when I took this shot, and when the new gates (installed at the end of last year) came down, I took this shot. The wait was considerable for the train, though, as in the Czech Republic it can be a few minutes (not that this means you should do something stupid at a crossing).

Express Pan at Nadrazi Hostivar
Description:
Ive done a number of express pans, of course, and train pans generally, but its only a rare opportunity when I can get an express in the snow. Snow, or at least powder, inevitably magnifies the sensation of speed in a photo, or for that matter in real life.

Express Pan at Nadrazi Hostivar, Picture 3
Description:
This to me is a classic pan shot, although many people get shots like this without panning, so Im not sure if my opinion is really correct.

Express Pan at Nadrazi Hostivar, Picture 4
Description:
In this photo the train is harder to make out, but thats kind of the point. The huge cloud of snow enveloping the train further adds to the dramatic sense of speed. The crazy thing is that few trains running through Hostivar are doing much more than 60 Km/h.

The light traffic at the hour I did my shoot allowed me to get some decent interior shots of the M1.
