RFP 7
Title:  RFP 7
Description:  Back in 1979, Potomac Yard was a busy place, though today you'd be hard pressed to prove it. RF&P used slug sets to work the hump, as seen here from Amtrak's Crescent. The slug appears to be from a modified Alco switcher.

Ununsual yard power
Title:  Ununsual yard power
Description:  RF&P was one of several roads that used slugs in their yards, though it was not a universal practice. Heres a hump set with a CR caboose at Potomac Yard in Alexandria a few years before the yard would be closed and the area redeveloped. You would not recognize it now.

Pigs south
Title:  Pigs south
Description:  In the 80s, containerization had not taken over the intermodal world to the extent it has today. This 79 car train of TOFC flats was typical, seen passing the Alexandria station. To the right, a DC Metro train rolls out of the King St station, making this photo truly intermodal.

Long hood first
Title:  Long hood first
Description:  This configuration was not the typical one for the RF&P, unlike its Virginia brethren N&W and Southern. Every once in a while a unit would get backwards. Today its the leader on this 52 car southbound, passing the Alexandria passenger station.

Northbound pigs
Title:  Northbound pigs
Description:  I believe this was train 100, rolling north into Potomac Yard with 28 trailer flats. RF&P was peculiar in that even units faced north, odd units faced south, as seen here.

Title:  Add on
Description:  RF&P had a cab signalling system that was not compatible with anything else, and off line power was not equipped with it, even major connection SCL. This is why you never see foreign power leading there. Train 171 is south at AF with an RF&P leader, added at Potomac Yard just to the north. Looks like the railroad was anticipating a quick turn on the power-RF&P got pretty good utilization, and it was not unusual to see the same power twice in a day-since they added a unit on the rear of the consist as well. The extra power will surely not be needed to roll the train's 96 cars over the RF&P's profile. Of note, three years from the CSX merger, the renumbering has taken hold in earnest. All three CSX units have been renumbered into the 6000's, with the 6531 already repainted.

Got the juice
Title:  Got the juice
Description:  OJT, the Tropicana orange juice train, rolls north at AF. Typically, even numbered units faced north; somehow 138 got turned and is running backward. The train will terminate at Tropicana's Kearny NJ distribution center, where trucks will take the juice throughout the northeast. The cars will return south as they are unloaded, and are not returned as a unit train.

RF&P leader
Title:  RF&P leader
Description:  RF&P had a cab signalling system that was not compatible with anything else, so its units had to lead `etween Alexandria and Richmond until CSX equipped enough of its own units to lead on this segment after it acquired the RF&P. Here a former RF&P unit leads 85 cars northbound rast the Alexandria station.
