Album Info:I hiked some of the high peaks in New Hampshire’s Presidential Range with my daughter Debbie on a beautiful clear August day. Our route went up via the Jewell trail, which starts at Marshfield Station, the base of the Mount Washington Cog Rwy. The Jewell trail scales the Presidential range via a ridgeline that runs just north of, and generally parallel to the MWCR‘s track on the next ridgeline to the south of the trail. We got off to an early start hiking and emerged into krumholtz (stunted, waist-high spruce) which gave us great visibility right as the first train of the day (steam powered) emerged into view across Burt Ravine. The steam train was followed by several more trains powered by the new biodiesel cog locomotives. The later-departing diesel powered trains essentially blocked the steam train in at the summit of Mt. Washington until the “down“ train schedule allowed for multiple trains to descend together in close order. We pushed on hiking, joining the Appalachian Trail between Mt. Clay and Mt. Washington in time to see the steam train‘s descent. The A-T parallels the Cog track for about a half mile before hikers must cross at grade just before the final push up to the summit. I photographed multiple trains along this stretch of the Appalachian Trail, and got some distant shots of Cog trains as we hiked southbound on the A-T enroute to ascents up and over Mount Monroe, and then Mount Eisenhower before ending our day hike back in the Mount Washington Valley. We had spectacular weather for our adventure, and I got a real kick of photographing MWCR trains at seldom-posted photo locations enroute between the base and the summit.

Description:  It's later in the day, and we've hiked over to the AMC's Lake of the Clouds hiker's hut, and we're now scaling Mount Monroe. You can just barely make out the train on the same trestle that I shot from the opposite direction earlier in the hike.
