Dates:9/11/2015 - 9/12/2015
Album Info:I drove up for the 2015 railfan's day on the Cog (friday, Sept 11th) , then on the 12th hiked up to the Presidential Range ridgeline, then back down alongside the cog tracks to reach the Jacob's Ladder trestle in time for the first train of the day - steam powered - to pass. I then hiked back up along the cog tracks, getting shots of the following diesel-powered cog trains at different locations along the steep upper part of the climb, finally getting the steam train heading back down the mountain on the Long Trestle. It was a long and strenuous hike to get to Jacobs Ladder, but it was certainly worth it for me.

MWCR 9 - Waumbek shoving upgrade on Jacobs Ladder trestle
Title:  MWCR 9 - Waumbek shoving upgrade on Jacobs Ladder trestle
Description:  This was the money Ihot of the day, and the one that I hiked three and a half hours in to get. The steepest part of the Mt Washington Cog Railway (37.4% gradient), and arguably the most photogenic spot along the cog railway's route.

Description:  The engineer saw me taking photos up on the hillside and recognized me from the day before. He gave a friendly toot on the whistle - also a photogenic bonus steam plume for a "down" train. That's Mount Clay in the upper right of the photo. I had climbed up that long ridgeline up to Mt Clay earlier in the morning to gain my hoped-for photo spot at Jacobs Ladder

On the way up to me
Title:  On the way up to me
Description:  I reached my intended photo location on the knoll overlooking the Jacobs Ladder trestle as the steam train started up the mountain from the base station. In this shot you can see the steam train getting closer, the Waumbek water tank, and two diesel powered trains down at the base station in the upper left corner of the photo. The Red diesel - M3 Abenaki is boarding passengers, and the White Diesel (with purple passenger car) has already started up the hill behind the steam train.

MWCR M3 approaching the summit station in thick fog
Title:  MWCR M3 approaching the summit station in thick fog
Description:  The locomotive is moving over advance steel work for a new transfer switch being installed at the summit to allow a second track at the summit station. With just one track, trains can get pinned in and blocked from descending until the trains downhill of them have departed. The good news is that this will allow the Cog Railway to schedule a second steam train each day in future seas`ns. The first train of the day will be steam powered, then another departure around 3:00 in the afternoon will be steam powered.

MWCR steam train heading up the long trestle
Title:  MWCR steam train heading up the long trestle
Description:  I was hiking in the Willey Range of the White Mountains, and caught this view of the MWCR steam train going up the long trestle from an open spot on the summit of Mt. Avalon. The steam engine is geared pretty low - 40 discrete cylinder strokes per one revolution of the cog wheel. So there's a LOT of exhaust when the train is headed up the mountain. And this perspective gives a good idea of how tiny the train is compared to the massif of the Mt. Washington Range. You can see the Jacobs Ladder trestle a little down and to the left of the train. That's the steepest section of track, and it certainly looks that way from this angle. You can just barely make out the red passenger coach in the enlarged version of this photo.
