Texas & Pacific P-1-r class Pacific 704 was outside the Texas Pacific-Missouri Pacific Terminal Railroad of New Orleans' engine house at RACE STREET YARD. The loco had been built by Baldwin (51666) in April 1919 as T&P 604 and then almost immediately renumbered 704. It was modernized with Boxpok main drivers, roller bearings, a larger tender and other improvements in April 1944, and received running board skirts in July 1949. Half of the T&P's 22 Pacifics received blue-and-gray EAGLE paint jobs; but only two, the 704 and 706, were fitted with skirts. The engine was retired in March 1952, the engine house was razed around 1967 and Race Street Yard was removed in 1984. (approximate date of photo) |

Bisso 0-6-0 No. 1 |
Description: |
Former Texas Pacific-Missouri Pacific Terminal Railroad of New Orleans (TPMPT) 0-6-0 number 1 was photographed in September 1951 at its new home, the New Orleans Coal & Bisso Towboat Co. The loco – and its sibling No. 2 – had been built by Alco-Richmond in June 1907 (42928-42929) as Trinity & Brazos Valley 75 and 76, for use at Galveston; but following the T&BV’s bankruptcy in 1914, the railroad lost its access to Galveston from Fort Worth over the Santa Fe and the two switchers became redundant. The City of Houston bought the two locomotives via the Barry Equipment Co. in 1917 and they arrived on 31 March lettered Houston Municipal 1 and 2. They were leased to the International & Great Northern from March 1918 until October 1921, and were sold to Grant Locomotive and Car Works [of Houston] in1922. They subsequently moved to the TP-MPT where they retained their previous numbers. In early 1948 the TP-MPT received four Alco S2 diesels, and the 0-6-0’s were sold to Bisso by August 1949. Besides operating coal-burning towboats and ferries, Bisso also provided coal for other vessels and used its locos to move hopper cars from a 2-track yard along the New Orleans Public Belt then up the Mississippi River levee to its coal-handling facility along the river. Bisso’s coaling operation ended around 1955, and with it, the need for any locomotives. No. 1 disappeared, and was probably scrapped; but No. 2 remained on Bisso property until 2010, when it was donated to the Louisiana Railway Heritage Trust. (approximate date of photo) |

Description: |
While the 0-8-0 was a pretty common locomotive type, the Southern Pacific Lines only owned 27 of these: 15 on the SP proper and 12 on the Texas & New Orleans. T&NO 175-186 were built at the railroad's Houston Shops between 1930 and 1936, utilizing boiler sections from retired MM-1 class 2-6-6-2's 900-911. All were renumbered 850-861 in 1950, so their original numbers could be assigned to a mixture of Alco RSD5’s and Baldwin AR616's built in 1952 and '53. One common assignment in the New Orleans area was the long-distance transfer runs from AVONDALE YARD, at the west end of the HUEY P. OONG BRIDGE, to the L&N and the Southern on the eastern side of the city. The 182 was photographed at ALGIERS YARD in the summer of 1950. It had'been built in March 1931, was renumbered 857 on 29 September 1950 and was scrapped on 24 February 1956. (approximate date) |

This Mogul was one of a gsoup of 15 2-6-0's built by Baldwin in June 1912 as Southern Pacific Lines 500-514. In December 1949, the entire group was renumbered 685-699; and in May 1950 they were renumbered again, to 460-474. Here at ALGIERS YARD, the 468 shows evidence of its most recent renumbering. All of these locomotives lasted for at least 40 years, being retired between June 1952 and January 1957. This loco was sold to Houston Compressed Steel on 2 February 1955. (approximate date) |

The Washington-Western Railroad was chartered by the Green Brothers Gravel Co. in 1940 to serve its gravel pit at Jenkins, Louisiana. This was along the Gulf Mobile & Ohio's Bogue Chitto Branch in Washington Parish, just south of the Parish Seat at Franklinton. This 0-6-0 was built by Alco-Brooks under serial no. 52259 in November 1922 as Illinois Central 210, and went to the Washington-Western in November 1954. This pit closed in 1966, so the W-W moved a pit at Clifton, about eight miles north of here; but that operation used diesels. |

This 4-6-0 was built by Baldwin in August 1889 as Texas & Pacific class D-5 number 200. It was sold to the Cinclare Central Plantation at Brusly, in West Baton Rouge Parish, where it was used to haul sugar canc trains over the T&P's Port Allen Branch. Cinclare replaced the 200 with a used 44-ton General Electric center-cab diesel-electric loco, and the Ten Wheeler was sold to the Willis Shortlhne in 1955. It was last used around 1963 and subsequently scrapped. Notice the cable on the coupler which was being used to move the GM&O gondola on the adjacent track. (approximate date) |

Shortly before they were discontinued on 11 March 1965, the Missouri Pacific’s eastbound (on the left) and westbound ORLEANEANS met at Eunice, Louisiana. These were the day trains between New Orleans and Houston, and should have met at Elton, 20 miles west of here; so the westbound train was running about 45 minutes late. By this time there was no longer any food service available on these trains, but passengers could order box lunches from the conductor. The track in the foreground was the Rock Island’s line from Eunice to Alexandria, and was its connection with the Southern Pacific off to the right.
