Good to see
Title:  Good to see
Description:  This B&M F 7 was rescued from a future as a bunch of refrigerators and landed here at Conway. As much as I liked the blue dip paint scheme, I think it looks better in its original paint.

Going for a ride
Title:  Going for a ride
Description:  We went up to North Conway on the way to Mt Washington in July 2004. It was a convenient place to overnight, and we got to ride a few miles on the old Maine Central Mountain Division. Sadly, gone are the days of harvest gold GP 38s lugging real tonnage over the White Mountains to Vermont. The weather, as it always is for me, is dismal.

Getting closer
Title:  Getting closer
Description:  But still a long way off. I wish I had ridden this train while it was still steam. The price tag was a little steep, pardon the pun. There were three of us, and almost $150 for the ride was too much for my budget at the time.

Title:  Side view
Description:  I got a side shot of this EL car built by the Erie at their shop in Dunmore PA. This one was painted close to the end, the stencil under the ACI tag showing it was done at Meadville, where EL had their system car shop, in October of 1975.

New life
Title:  New life
Description:  Museums and tourist roads often are a second life for cast off road power, and Alcos are popular. In this case, an ex D&H RS 36 has been spared from the torch, working on a line it is familiar with, at North Creek, itself taking on a second, post D&H existence.

Description:  US 30 bypasses downtown Fremont to the north, and is a fairly busy road. The drivers on it are not thrilled when the 10 MPH Fremont & Elkhorn Valley dinner train crosses, as we see here.

Home
Title:  Home
Description:  The Hoosier Valley RR Museum occupies what was once the Erie/EL main line, now just a short remnant of what was once a 1000 mile line from Jersey City to Chicago. This Alco is right where it belongs, on its home turf-or whats left of it. MP 180, to the left of the unit, shows distance from Marion, OH, and was actually at Delong; N Judson was MP 199.4; but good to have one, anywhere it is.

Unlikely scene
Title:  Unlikely scene
Description:  On my way back from a visit to Jersey, I took a moment to drive into North Judson to see what was left of a one time hot spot. The main line action is now a long ago memory-I rode through here on the Cardinal in 1984-but it is now home to the Hoosier Valley RR Museum, which is well worth the visit. As we pulled up, I saw this LIRR caboose being unloaded from a flatbed. This is about the last place I would have expected to see a LIRR buggy. But there it was!!

This is how you do it
Title:  This is how you do it
Description:  The LIRR caboose came in on a low boy trailer. Rather than fire up a diesel, one of the members Jeeps would be pressed into action to pull the buggy from the trailer. By sheer happenstance, I was coming through town that afternoon and was able to witness the event. The Jeep has just pulled the car off the trailer. Once the trailer is back together and off the track, one of their engines will shove the buggy into the yard.

Give it a pull
Title:  Give it a pull
Description:  The Jeep gives a tug, making the caboose roll oh-so-gently off the trailer, along with a judicious handling of the hand brake. It was a delicate move, but they did it.

F at the station

South end power
Title:  South end power
Description:  The train operates pull-pull, making it much easier to change direction at the end of the run. Since they run on the M&NA at the discretion of their dispatcher, the train can go either way from Branson, depending on traffic, making this arrangement especially helpful. The power on the south end is a GP 30, probably the only place in America you can ride behind one.

KCS switch engine
Title:  KCS switch engine
Description:  This 0-8-0 is preserved at the museum at Carona. This area once had numerous lines to handle the coal (this is about 5 miles from Big Brutus, the worlds largest power shovel), lead, and zinc that was mined in the area. Now there's little left, just the BNSF's ex Frisco lines, and the South Kansas & Oklahoma, a WATCO line that is ex MP.
