Shown here (R to L) are Pennsylvania Railroad engines #9611, #9608-B, and #9619. All are AF-16's built by the American Locomotive Company in May of 1951, rated at 1,600 horsepower each, and retired in July of 1966 after just 15 years of revenue service. Partially visible at the left are a GG-1 and two modified P-5A electric locomotives.

All were built by GM-EMD and rated at 1,750 horsepower each. #7149 was built in November of 1957. They have just passed under the 24th Street Bridge, and are now threading the interlocking on their way up the Allegheny Mountains via the Horseshoe Curve to Gallitzin and points West with a mixed-cargo freight train. The smoke plumes in the distance pinpoint the Brick Plant.

Sweetland. Here is a photo by David R. Sweetland that was taken in Hyndman, Pennsylvania, in March of 1961. It was published originally in his (2000) book entitled "Pennsylvania Railroad Color Pictorial: Volume One ~ Altoona To New York City," page 57. Partial Caption: "'Ike' and 'Mike,' as they were later called, were pulling cars from the B&O interchange at Hyndman, Pa., in March 1961. The Baltimore & Ohio station in the background was situated along its main tracks." Prominent here (R to L) are PRR engines #5595 and #5597. Both are BS-7M switchers built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works in May of 1950 and rated at 750 horsepower each. In this context, they're on their way back to Altoona ~ via Hollidaysburg ~ with the "Cumberland Local."

Shown here is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #9581, a BF-15 built by the Baldwin Locomotive Company in May of 1949, rated at 1,500 horsepower, and retired in December of 1963 after just 14 years of revenue service.

PRR 9618, AF-16, 1962
Description:
Sweetland. Here is a duplicate 35mm color slide of a photo by David R. Sweetland that was taken in East Altoona, Pennsylvania, in January of 1962. Shown here (L to R) are Pennsylvania Railroad engines #9618 and #5753. Both were built by the American Locomotive Company. #9618 is an AF-16 built in May of 1951, rated at 1,600 horsepower, and retired in July of 1966. #5753 is an AFP-20 built in October of 1947, rated at 2,000 horsepower, and retired in September of 1962. Looks to me like both of these units have seen far better days!

Sweetland. Here is a duplicate 35mm color slide of a photo by David R. Sweetland that was taken in Enola, Pennsylvania, in April of 1962. Shown here is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #9476, an FF-20 built by Fairbanks-Morse as an FP-20A rated at 2,000 horsepower in July of 1948, later regeared and classified as an FF-20 freight locomotive, and retired in December of 1963 after just 15 years of revenue service.
