Album Info:
Most, if not all, of the photographs in this album were captured in Northeast Wisconsin in the fall of 2020, so they are mostly CN operating on former C&NW, GB&W, MILW, and SOO rails. Once in a while I try to catch ELS and WSOR on former MILW rails too.

A CN local crosses S. Outagamie St. and approaches W. Prospect Ave. as it heads southeast via former C&NW rails at Appleton, WI, at on 23 Sep. '20. Train was headed for Kimberly and Combined Locks. This intersection of W. Prospect Ave., S. Outagamie St., and W. Haskel St. was recently reconstructed (and reconfigured), as part of the much needed reconstruction of W. Prospect Ave. from these tracks to S. Seminole Rd. This portion of W. Prospect Ave., from S. Mason St. westward, used to be named Carver St. The portion of W. Prospect Ave. from S. Mason St. to S. Title:
CN 3151
Description:
A CN container train crosses the Rat River and bisects the Rat River Wildlife Area as it speeds southeast via former SOO rails at Medina Junction, WI, on 24 Sep. '20. Train had two locomotives, CN 3151 and CN 3848. The locomotives are passing the foundations of the old SOO facilities here. These foundations rest along both sides of the tracks about 700' northwest of the actual junction. If the direction of view in the photograph (http://www.wisconsinhistory.org/Content.aspx?dsNav=N:4294963828-4294963814&dsRecordDetails=R:IM24898) on the Wisconsin Historical Society website is labeled accurately, a coal tower and shed stood on the left side of the tracks and a water tower and another shed to the right. The CN microwave tower in the background stands at the approximate site of where the SOO/WC Medina Station depot once stood on Hwy. M.

Title:
GTW 4623
Description:
GTW 4623 crosses W. 2nd St. while working the CN, former C&NW, yard at Appleton Junction, WI, on 25 Sep. '20. Carter's Caboose, 1428 W. 2nd St., a small, old, rail side tavern, is partially visible to the right. It dates to at least 1887, when it was a grocery store operated by Peter Leininger. By 1901 it was a sample room operated by John Sigl. By ‘30 it was a soft drink establishment owned by Hubert J. Merkel and August F. Brandt (Prohibition was still in effect). By ’36 it was a tavern operated by Albert Giesen, owned by Mrs. Gretchen Merkel. By ’38 it was Bob’s Tavern, still owned by Mrs. Merkel. It was the Junction Tavern from at least ’43-’71, still owned by Mrs. Merkel until at least ’60 (there were at least two different owners between ’67-’71). At some point in the ‘70s it became Pete’s Junction (possibly Palomino Pete’s Junction). It was called Netticoat Junction ca. the ‘90s (owned by Joanne M. ‘Nettie’ Nett). I haven’t learned how long it has been Carter’s Caboose. The former Appleton Wood Products Co. factory, now part of the Miller Electric facility, is partially visible beyond that. Built in 1916, the walls include some nice, decorative brickwork (including cast or carved keystones depicting bowling pins above the windows), which Miller obscured with cheap metal siding at some point after they bought it ca. 1975.

Description:
CN 5340 parallels Union St. and passes the former Monroe St. grade crossing as it sorts cars at the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI, on 25 Sep. '20. The area between the tracks and Union St., from Main St. to Monroe St., used to be the yard. I don't know when the current, significantly larger yard (extending southwestward from Winneconne Ave.) was built, but a map from 1909 shows the yard still here.

A CN local passes the Main St. overpass as it shoves its train into the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI, on 1 Oct. '20. The historic Neenah Stove Works, currently occupied by Hafemeister Machine Corp., 635 Main St., and International Children's Fund, 619 Main St., is partially visible in the background to the right. The oldest part of the facility dates to 1857, when the Moore & Wells foundry was established. [The facility has undergone numerous name changes in its long history, but if one were to pick a generic and historic name for it, it would need to be Neenah Stove Works because that is what it was referred to for so many years, through several changes in ownership. The second most common generic reference would be the Neenah foundry, because for many years it was the only foundry in Neenah, but obviously that could cause confusion today.]

CN 5702 and CN 8865
Description:
A CN container train traverses the west leg of the wye and approaches the Main St. overpass at the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI, on 1 Oct. '20. The locomotives are passing the remnants of the foundation from the ca. 1955 masonry SOO depot. There are rail sections supported by concrete blocks and railroad ties stacked upon it. It was built to replace the wooden depot built in 1891 on Sherry St., about 850 ft. to the southeast, which was torn down soon after the new one opened. On the far side of the train lies Arrowhead Park, a closed paper sludge landfill. Before the landfill was opened in the '50s, the south shore of Little Lake Butte des Morts came right up to the north leg of the wye. Clearwater Paper Corp., historically Kimberly-Clark’s Lakeview mill, 249 N. Lake St., Neenah, WI (physically located in Fox Crossing, WI (formerly Town of Menasha, WI, from 1855 until 14 Apr. 2016)), an active rail customer, is partially visible in the background to the right. The new, concrete railroad ties which were recently laid out next to the main line have even more recently been picked up and re-stacked.

Description:
A CN local parallels Lush St. and crosses Kaukauna St. as it heads northeast via the former joint MILW/SOO rails at Menasha, WI, on 2 Oct. '20. The locomotive will momentarily foul Kaukauna St. while a crew member opens the railroad swing bridge over the Fox River Navigation Canal to permit marine traffic. This grade crossing used to include Lush St. and Chute St., but those streets have been reconfigured. The defunct Menasha Municipal Utility plant, purchased by Simply Incredible Foods in Jun. '14, dominates the horizon to the left. The former Noffke Lumber facility is partially visible to the right. It still has a spur, but the turnout for it was removed years ago.

Description:
A CN container train passes Kampo Rd. as it heads southwest via a remnant of the former C&NW main line, now relegated to a passing siding, at Neenah, WI, on 24 Oct. '20. Train had two locomotives, IC 2726 pulling as well as CN 2689 pushing. The former SOO rails, also in use by CN, run parallel along the other side of the train. The building in the background to the left was home to Plexus' Neenah Design Center, 55 Jewelers Park Dr., Neenah, WI. Erected in 1987 and expanded in 2000, it has stood vacant since 2017, when they decided they needed another new office building in downtown Neenah for some stupid reason. At least one tenant has occupied part of the building recently.

An interesting and unique CN train heads north past the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI, on 24 Oct. '20. Train had one locomotive, CN 4791. Consist included CN 414852 DGRMS Test Car, CN 1057 TEST Track Evaluation System. This view would have been prevented by the dominating silhouette of the original Neenah Foundry facility, later known as Plant 1, which stood here for over ¾’s of a century. Established in 1872 as Aylward Plow Works (a.k.a. Aylward & Sons) at 120 N. Lake St., they erected a new foundry at 500 W. Winneconne Ave. in 1918 “in a rural area of southwestern Neenah.” The name of Neenah Foundry was adopted in 1922. Expanded numerous times over the years, it became Plant 1 in 1960 when Plant 2 was constructed in the then rural area at the intersection of Byrd Ave. and the aptly named Aylward St. (followed by Plant 3 in 1967). Plant 1 was closed in 1994, the corporate overlords didn’t want to spend any money to update the plant. It stood abandoned for a while and was eventually demolished. Galloway Co., Inc., an active rail customer along a remnant of the former C&NW main line, is partially visible in the background to the left. The facility was started in 1927 at 601 S. Commercial St. as Neenah Milk Products, Galloway took it over in 1955. The facility has been expanded over the old right-of-way since some portions of the main line were pulled up.

GTW 4907
Description:
A CN local hugs the bluff, passes the Vulcan Heritage Park, and passes the S. Memorial Dr. bridge over the Fox River as it descends the grade into 'The Flats' via former C&NW rails at Appleton, WI, on 30 Oct. '20. Local was headed for Kimberly and Combined Locks. Now just a short branch line, this stretch of rail is a remnant of the MLS&W main line which once ran from Milwaukee to Ashland. The MILW rails used to run parallel along this side of the active rails. Over the past several years, I have noticed that some misinformed individuals erroneously refer to ‘The Flats’ as ‘Oneida Flats,’ or some other variation. For all of my life, the historic, industrial heart of Appleton has been simply ‘The Flats.’ However, in the late 19th and early 20th centuries it was referred to as 'The Water Power.'

Description:
A CN local crosses Stroebe Rd. as it heads northeast via former SOO rails with 6 cars at Stroebe, WI, on 31 Oct. '20. Stroebe is a railroad station in Fox Crossing, WI (formerly Town of Menasha, Winnebago Co., WI, from 1855 until 14 Apr. 2016). The former C&NW rails are in the foreground. The Great Northern Corp. facility is partially visible in the background. They have a spur, but have not received rail service for quite a while. In fact, the turnout connecting their spur to the main line was torn out earlier this year.

CN 0033 was part of the consist of a CN container train passing N. Lake St. as it headed northwest via former SOO rails at Neenah, WI, on 31 Oct. '20. I usually put the camera away after I shoot the locomotives when a container train rolls by. I had to do a double take and hastily grab the camera when I noticed this car. This was the better of the spray-and-pray shots.

GTW 4933 and IC 3115
Description:
A CN local traverses the west leg of the wye as it heads northwest via former SOO rails at Neenah, WI, on 26 Nov. '20. The local is passing the foundation from the ca. 1955 masonry SOO depot. It was built to replace the wooden depot built in 1891 on Sherry St., about 850 ft. to the southeast, which was torn down soon after the new one opened. On the far side of the train lies Arrowhead Park, a closed paper sludge landfill. Before the landfill was opened in the '50s, the south shore of Little Lake Butte des Morts came right up to the north leg of the wye, which is hidden on the other side of the train. The Fox Valley Energy Center (formerly Minergy Fox Valley Glass Aggregate Plant) used to dominate the background, from its opening in Jan. '98 until demolition was completed in the spring of '16. The corporate headquarters of Plexus, 1 Plexus Way, can be seen in the background to the right. The P. H. Glatfelter Co. paper mill occupied that site for 135 years, the oldest part of the original mill was constructed in 1874. Glatfelter purchased the mill from Bergstrom Paper Co. in 1979. Bergstrom had purchased the mill, originally Winnebago Paper, in 1904. Glatfelter moved the jobs to Ohio in June 2006, the mill stood idle for about two years until it was torn down, demolition was completed in May 2009.

Description:
A CN through freight traverses the west leg of the wye at the north end of the former SOO yard and approaches the Main St. overpass at Neenah, WI, on 26 Nov. '20. Train had three locomotives, CN 2274, CN 2543, BCOL 4602. First Presbyterian Church, 200 S. Church St., is partially visible above the second locomotive. The clock tower of the once impressive 1888 city hall building, intersection of S. Commercial St. and W. Doty St., looks like a church steeple from this perspective, but it is a block east of the church. Some of Neenah's bland, unimaginative, modern buildings, posing as architecture, stand in the background to the left. I am not a fan of modern architecture, obviously. The Holiday gas station stood somewhere in the foreground before the Main St. overpass was built.

GTW 4907
Description:
A CN local, with 7 cars, crosses the Fox River Navigation Canal via the former C&NW swing bridge in 'The Flats' at Appleton, WI, on 28 Nov. '20. Train was returning from Kimberly and Combined Locks. I haven't noticed a builder's plate, but according to bridgehunter.com, the Warren through truss swing bridge was built in 1908. However, a recent contributor to that site believes it was built after 1919. A photograph caption in the Post-Crescent on 29 May 1974 states that the bridge was "nearly 50 years old." The canal is in the foreground, but the body of water beyond the spit of land to the left is the last remaining scrap of what was once the South Channel of the Fox River through 'The Flats.' Old maps reveal that the west end of the South Channel was filled in at some point between 1916 and 1957. Most of the remainder of the South Channel was filled in the following years. Over the past several years, I have noticed that some misinformed individuals erroneously refer to ‘The Flats’ as ‘Oneida Flats,’ or some other variation. For all of my life, the historic, industrial heart of Appleton has been simply ‘The Flats.’ However, in the late 19th and early 20th centuries it was referred to as 'The Water Power.'

CN 2999 and CN 5627
Description:
A CN through freight approaches Harrison St. as it heads south via former SOO rails at Town of Oshkosh, Winnebago Co., WI, on 1 Dec. '20. Train had four locomotives, CN 2999 and CN 5627 pulling as well as CN 2984 and CN 2308 or 2808 mid-train. The former C&NW right-of-way runs parallel to these tracks just out-of-frame to the right. The CN main line transitions from the former SOO to the former C&NW right-of-way at Harrison St. I was standing on Harrison St., in the City of Oshkosh, but the train is traversing an isolated, pitiful scrap of the Town of Oshkosh.

CN 2325 and CN 2522
Description:
A CN container train crosses the mouth of the Fox River via the 2013 CN bascule bridge at Oshkosh, WI, on 1 Dec. '20. This bridge was completed in Aug. '13 to replace the former C&NW 1899 swing bridge. The interesting and historic brick industrial facility at 32-36 Broad St., was erected by Oshkosh’s J. A. Day & Co. in 1870. The flour mill was built for George M. Wakefield, et al., to replace the earlier Oshkosh City Flouring Mills, which stood here until destroyed by fire on 17 May ‘70. That large, old, wooden flour mill (built in ‘56) had been purchased by A. S. Trow & Co. in ‘69 (Wakefield was a partner in that company). When the current facility was completed in ‘70, it became known as the Wakefield Mill, or Wakefield’s Mill, operated by the Wakefield Bros. It continued to be referred to as the Wakefield Mill until at least ‘95, operated by Woodford, Foote & Co. in ‘76, and then Foote Bros. & Co. from about ‘77 until ‘90. It operated as the Foote-Cornish Milling Co. from ‘91 until about the end of 1900. It was home to the Wisconsin Pulp Plaster Co. circa ‘04-‘07. The Baker Paper Co., founded in ‘99, moved into the facility in Aug. ‘14 and owned it until ca. 1993. It is currently home to the Oshkosh-area United Way, et al.
