Odd corner
Title:  Odd corner
Description:  The oddest corner of the vast B&O system was on a rapid transit system in New Yorks Staten Island. For many years, til the MTA took over the trains, the B&O ran the Staten Island Rapid Transit, which carried riders from the St George ferry terminal down to Tottenville. They also handled whatever freight traffic was on the line. I lucked into a one car local while on a class break one day in 1977. Power was a B&O SW with one car and a caboose. Im guessing this is Port Richmond, on the line from AK draw to St George, which once had rapid transit service, but has not in many years, as can be seen in the stripped down high level platform and single track. Oddly, the stairs from the street are still in place, and if I recall, were not blocked off.

Something for everyone
Title:  Something for everyone
Description:  I was riding into Washington on Amtrak and caught this local power just outside DC. We have a B&O unit in blue, one in Chessie paint, and a Western Maryland geep, still in original paint. Just need a C&O unit, but this is still pretty good.

The one and only
Title:  The one and only
Description:  The one and only WM road power I was ever able to get a shot of was rolling past one of the parking lots at Niagara Falls when I was there for a more tourist oriented visit. The traffic was impossible, as it usually is in the summer, and I didn't know the roads or the railroads well enough to chase. This grab shot is the best I'll ever have of one of the more enigmatic eastern roads.

WM 3799
Title:  WM 3799
Description:  There's a rail line thar runs past the parking lot on the Canadian side of the falls. As I was walking back to the car, I heard a train, looked up and to my surprise there was a WM unit leading. I was not able to chase-congestion getting out of the parking area was just impossible, but did get this grab shot of the one and only WM road unit I was ever able to shoot.

Seaboard in Chicago
Title:  Seaboard in Chicago
Description:  An unlikely prospect, but they got there on their L&N lines, via the Monon. In another year or so, they would combine with Chessie to make CSX, and all manner of southern units would show up in Chicago. An ex Mopac transfer hack adds to the variety.

Westbound pigs
Title:  Westbound pigs
Description:  A westbound trailer train heads for Sand Patch with trailers for Chicago behind a set of Chessie power. The building whose corner is visible at the right of the photo, partly hidden behind the tree, is the Holiday Inn, which on floors higher than the 4th, offers a great view of the action-or at least it did in 1984. Don't know how tall those trees are now, 30 years later.

Power in the yard
Title:  Power in the yard
Description:  Not sure if this is Montgomery-I chased the 614 from Gauley Bridge to Huntington, so it has to be west of Gauley Bridge, but dont think its as far as Charleston. Wherever it is, good to see all that Chessie power 30 years later. The pair of units in the foreground had just come in with a westbound coal train.

Rare find
Title:  Rare find
Description:  There is a lot of power here at the shop, but the oddball is C&O 3302, a U30C, one of a very few 6 axle GEs on the C&O. The pair of U30B's is also a nice find. The place was a veritable museum of 1960's motive power.

Rolling downtown
Title:  Rolling downtown
Description:  The CSX former ACL line through Rocky Mount NC runs right down the main drag in Rocky Mount NC on a dedicated right of way. While keeping vehicles and pedestrians off the tracks, it does tie up the town, especially for a southbound entering the yard. Here a four unit set of B36-7s leads a pig train north. Title:  Tying up town
Description:  A southbound behind a pair of GEs and an SD 40 approaches the yard at Rocky Mount. Southbounds entering the yard did so at less than 15 MPH, and would tie up downtown for 20 minutes. I saw three trains, all had SCL power, including one with a solid set of SCL SD45s.

Trains rep
Title:  Trains rep
Description:  In the late 70s, Trains magazine, during one of its motive power surveys, looked for a diesel that typified the power on American railroads. Their conclusion was that the unit that did so was B&O 3802. Here it is, some years later, trailing on an eastbound. Perhaps typically, it is the last unit of three on an othewise unremarkable train on an unremarkable day.
