Into the shadows
Title:  Into the shadows
Description:  The shorter days are making it harder to get the late afternoon shots, especially where there are buildings to block the sun. A just a little too late KL 1 comes into Binghamton behind a yellowjacket and a pair of CP units. It will wait here at the south end of Bevier St for BUAB to pass. Once it clears the Buffalo Runner, KL 1 will proceed to QD and the Tier.

First SOO power
Title:  First SOO power
Description:  Since the first grain train ran to the Port of Albany, we had been waiting for this day. The grain trains originated in Minneapolis, so we knew it was a matter of time before power from CP owned SOO Line came east. It finally happened on a Thursday night, the train going to Albany after darkness had fallen. The return trip, however was a home run. We could not have asked for a better situation. Clear sky, and the train called for 1330, setting up a westbound chase in perfect light. We followed him to Hornell. It was great. ABBU sits at the south end of Bevier St with two SOO units trailing CP 5674.

Power assist
Title:  Power assist
Description:  When CP took over operation of the D&H, they almost immediately brought in leased power to augment their own fleet. There were two groups of power initially, from GATX and PLM(Precision Leasing Management). The PLM units were in this attractive blue scheme, and became known as "plums" to the local fans. Two of them lead a pair of CP units on 555, formerly PYRP, at BX, passing the Agway feed mill.

Description:  Same train. RPPY became train 556 under CPs regime, as nearly all trains had numbers, as opposed to the former Conrail style alpha codes instituted by Guilford. We see 556 rolling across the Southern Tier at BD, 25 cars in tow behind its two units.

Colorful pushers
Title:  Colorful pushers
Description:  The second daytime move of a BUAB with SOO power was Dec 9, this time northbound, leaving Binghamton late morning. The head end was an unexpected treat, but the pushers were also not to be ignored. An EMD lease unit in an attractive paint job reminiscent of the last Rock scheme was teamed with a candy apple red SOO unit. Here they are pushing at Fuller Rd.

Lots of changes
Title:  Lots of changes
Description:  Everything. As we look at BUABs pushers, and EMD lease unit and a red SOO SD 40, note also the rest of this view. I am standing on what was the DLW Utica Branch, now abandoned. The track in the foreground is the new connection from the D&H to the NYSWs ex DLW line; you can see the Old State Rd crossing at far left. This was done as part of a project to eliminate the three overpasses at Bevier St, one ex DLW, two D&H, none of which was high enough to clear a standard 13'6" trailer, making access to businesses on Broad Av a challenge. As part of that project, the NYSW gained access to its line via a new connection north of Bevier St, requiring its trains to go through that yard. The D&H was largely unaffected, except for realigning its tracks onto the new overpass. The train looks like its climbing to the sky due to the downgrade on the NYSW connector; its not as bad as it looks.

Odd combination
Title:  Odd combination
Description:  If you had said, in 1980, that the NYSW would be running high horsepower diesels on the D&H, and theyd be tied to SOO units, theyd have called the funny farm to come get you. In 1990, there it was. BUAB with one of the odder power sets any of us had seen, rolls under the signal gantry at Afton with an Albany bound grain train.

Stone bridge
Title:  Stone bridge
Description:  One place I liked, but was hard to shoot because of the trees, was the NY 7 overpass north of Sanitaria Springs. The attractive arch broidge was really photogenic, but if there were more than two units on the train, you could not get them all. BUAB had four, but I thought Id take advantage of the bare trees to get a shot of an unusual power set here.

On the other side of town
Title:  On the other side of town
Description:  A train is rolling...with apologies to the Eagles. The big game in town that day was a BUAB with NYSW and SOO power. It was over at QD downtown, waiting on a new crew. While we all milled around contemplating our chase, the radio announced that a BUME was about to go north out of East Binghamton. Getting out of the yard is a slow process, and I was able to get to BD ahead of the train, shooting its two recently arrived PLM units.

Classic scene
Title:  Classic scene
Description:  Uhis shot shows some of the remnants of the south end of Bevier St, on the east side of Binghamton. The signal protects what was at one time the crossing at BX, where train 390 is rolling north in this view taken from alongside the Agway plant, seen at right. Agway was an active Conrail customer"at the time of the photo(and sometimes got grain in Erie boxcars). Were standing on the main track of the DLW Syracuse and Utica line, which crossed the D&H where the train is moving. Behind me out of sight is the yard that serviced that line, YO yard. It was abandoned long before this photo was taken. The train is on the D&H, which bears to the east into Bevier St yard before going up to Belden tunnel and the capital district. Bevier St was adjacent to the DLW XO yard. The crossing at BX was removed in the early 80s and changed to a set of crossovers, with the tracks now forming a wye that allowed trains to go either to the ex DLW East Binghamton yard, or to the Buffelo Runner, the line this train is on. The NYSW, which had acquired the DLW trackage north of Binghamton, connected to the Buffalo Runner through a switch, under 390's third unit, to access its yard at the east end of Eries QD yard, near Libeoty St. In 1990, the overpasses on Bevier St were modified, with both the NYSW and CP going onto one bridge that was high enough to clear a standard 13'6" truck, eliminating the two D&H spans and tie DLW bridge to the west of those. The NYSW now used the D&H alignment to reach its ex DLW line via a connection north of Bevier St, with the DLW line through YO yard abandoned. The signals remgined up-there's one on the D&H side as well-into the nid 1990's, though they had been inactive for many years by that time.

Phosphate train
Title:  Phosphate train
Description:  One of the sporadic moves to run on the D&H was a phosphate train that originated in Floridas Bone Valley on CSX. It was usually symbolled 751, and had run through CSX power. This time, its a pair of Seaboard System SD 40-2s, which we see behind a pair of GATX lease units at the north end of Dyes Siding, which was on the grade about a mile south of Belden Tunnel. It has since been removed, thought the signal mast remains.

Downhill from here
Title:  Downhill from here
Description:  Train 556 rolls downhill at Nowlan Rd in Sanitaria Springs with its 54 cars. We caught a lot of northbounds here, not too many southbounds, so this was different. The guy taking video is fellow contributor Sam Botts, back when he was still a college man.

309 looks a lot like 556
Title:  309 looks a lot like 556
Description:  Except for the NYSW unit leading. Even a year into the CP operation of the D&H, NYSW power still showed up on a variety of trains that were not the normal stack train run throughs from Jersey to Buffalo. Here we have one of the B 40s leading 309 with three more units and 42 cars, coming througn BX into East Binghamton from Mechanicville. There are two notable units in the consist. PLM 3041 is one of the EMD 645 engine test bed units, and trailing is one of the few RS 36's legt on the roster, 5023.
